Tuning for Track

Hey guys -

Wondering what/how you are tuning for track racing. No matter how clean my handful of 3rd and 4th gear pulls are for street tuning, invariably, on the track, the car knocks - I data log with my laptop so it's not like I can just leave that connected and running in the car when Im doing HPDEs - what are you guys doing to prevent this issue? And what else would mitigate track knock? I assume it's heat soak related, so a bigger intercooler?

In general... less timing, less boost, more fuel. More octane. I run 91 octane timing and boost with E85 on my 520whp track map.

Yes, a good intercooler helps.

What intercooler do you currently have? Have you deleted EGR?

How many counts of knock are you getting?

your always going to be limited by your ecu etc. bigger intercooler will help. but unless ur monitoring intake air temp and compensating timing for it then ur always going to get variation. all you can do really is tune rich with low timing like already mentioned

a lot, and yes. deleted egr, was still getting knock on the old tune, and had Aaron retune on street and it was clean. On track, it picks up again.

Stock intercooler, for weight - looks like that's going to have to go though. What's the lightest aftermarket intercooler?

You need an intercooler, now. Hypertune or Blitz make light weight tube and fin intercoolers.

How many counts of knock are you getting? And when is it knocking? On a shift, mid pull?

The ECU has nothing to with it. It's seemingly his incomplete setup. Stock intercooler on a timed car, on the track...

I can't tell how many counts, but the ECU flashes a lot. knocking from 5-6k+ on top of 3rd and 4th gears.

Never heard of either of those, the "main" manufacturers here don't have them?

There's a whole thread discussing intercoolers here. Dallas and Kaj booth bought a blitz IIRC. And heel2toe has a hypertune.

We took my regular tune and dialed back the boost a bit, to about 25psi, so I'm not blowing crazy hot air. I use e85 to keep temps down. As Sean mentioned, I settled on the Blitz tube/fin FMIC because I wanted something that cooled more consistently, though it may not cool *as much* (initially) as a bar and plate.. I can worry less about heat soak. The thing is beautiful, by the way, and really, really light. I won't get into knock count because I got chastised last time But, I see none. I think tube and fin are less popular around here (and in the 'States?) since most people are after dyno numbers and E/Ts. Road-race peeps are kinda rare, from what I can tell. Not many of us are crazy enough to deal with all details that are involved in making a car perform in all aspects. LOL
My tune is locked, so I can't say what my timing map looks like, but my AFRs are the same as any other tune on 85.

Tube and fin for track use like others have said. I saw a good amount of not only MAT decreases but also oil temp decrease going from bar and plate to tube and fin.

Also, like others have said, they are lighter.

I've finally started tracking my evo this summer and it still manages to knock a little during wot pulls. This is with it tuned to pretty much the bare minimum, stock boost and quite low timing on 93 octane with a 3" bar and plate intercooler. It's a bit of a dog and virtual dyno says 260whp...

Now that I have a tow vehicle I'm just going to move to e85 and carry a drum to events.
