it is not advised to run staggered rims on an awd car. if theyre staggered offsets that is ok but not staggered widths

the different sized wheels are not exactly the same height ever, meaning the front wheels (assuming their smaller) will spin faster than the rears causing the tcase to heat up alot and can cause some serious damage. dont do it unless you wanna buy a new transfer case

But what if you put the exact same size tire on all four rims - despite the wheel width differences? Then you should be ok.

Right?.....

No, that's not how it works.

The difference in width will create a difference in height, since the sidewall will not be the same height on a 9" vs 8" wide wheel (or whatever). Even small %'s here will mess up the transfer cases.

There are people on the subie boards that do this with no short term issues, but honestly, why attempt it?

if you put the exact same size tire on differnt width wheels the rears would be smaller due to the stretching of the sidewall making it a tad bit shorter..

you also have to account for wheel weight. it will cause one to spin slightly faster cause the smaller wheel would be lighter

The tread surface is very tough rubber with layers of steel belts in it. It is made up a certain number of linear inches of tread surface wrapped in a loop. If you compress the edges of the tire down a little - yes the edges of the tread pattern roll down a bit but you should still have the same number of linear inches of tread surface in the middle. That part can't shrink can it?

We need a real world test. Exact same tire on 2 different width wheels and we can put a measuring tape around it and find out. Call it a science project.

As for different weights - shouldn't matter. All that matters in this case is the number of revolutions over a given distance.
