when mine started making the noise it was rather hit or miss. in fact it seemed to depend on the outside temperature and the road i was on at the time.

good luck with the drive with the service manager man.

Dan, those are some great numbers. And you thought your car was one of the weaker ones...

Trav, good call on the peeling calipers. Mike and I are having the same problems. I was afraid to go in for a warranty claim though. I have a little bit more done than you do.

guys im not being rude but i gave you the thread to the noise your having. They will never find anything wrong. It is a evo noise! It will happen and not happen at any time. As Mondo has said it dosn't affect the ride. I wish there was something that would fix it but, in 3 years of looking for a solution there is no deffinitave answer. Im also wondering i've never heard of a bearing making such a loud noise. And im not sure how it could come and go.

Well guys, i just got home from Buschur racing...

My very first pull un-tune:
306 AWHP and 308lb tq (dan knows i didnt know how much boost i was pushin)

Next pull boost turned down:
290/300

Final pull with 104/93 octane mix (about 3 gallons each) ((not a seperate map just more boost))
325/330

AL said my IX felt very strong... Got video footage/graphs to be uploaded tomorrow sometime..

Wish he printed me all my graphs, just got 2 of my 4 total pulls.

Mods as follows:
manifold
02 housing
TBE
MBC
air filter

Nick claims it wouldve been somewhere around 370 to 380 AWHP if i were on a dyno jet... Im planning on getting a Dyno run somewhere just for bragging rights if ya know what i mean..

well, the reason i thought the bearing was a plausible explanation was because of the description Jeff's friend sent me.

apperently the bearing is supposed to turn instead of the spring. if the bearing is broke the spring gets stuck, builds enough force, and that is what makes the noise. the reason they don't usually find it, is because when they take the strut/spring assembly out of the car they do it in one piece.

now honestly, i don't know enough about suspensions to really say, but it sounds plausible. and it is worth a try.

if it's not the bearing, then i will be more than willing to concede it is just an evo noise, and coilovers it shall be. hehe.

here is what Jeff forwarded to me though.

Jeff, no problem. What it sounds like from my experience is the "strut
mount bearing". The front strut mounts have a two piece bearing that is
built into the strut mount. Basically, the strut rod bolts through the
strut mount/bearing. This mount is the piece which has the three (or four
??) bolts on it that bolt through the body under the hood. The bearing
allows the whole strut to turn when you turn the steering wheel so that
the spring doesn't bind up or twist. If the mount isn't turning properly,
the spring will twist and probably move from the proper location when you
turn the wheel.
Additionally, if the bearing is blown out, the internal ball bearings
and/or other pieces may be floating around inside creating the noise he's
hearing. He should either have the dealer check it, or if he knows someone
that can SAFELY disassemble the strut WITH A SPRING COMPRESSOR, he can
remove the bearing/mount and check to see if it is coming apart. To do
this, he would remove the strut from the car, compress the spring with a
spring compressor, and then remove the single large nut on top of the
strut rod (which is visible in the middle of the strut mount).
If this is unclear or you need more info, let me know.
-Matt
at any rate, it is worth a shot. because my noise has progressed beyond to tolerable.

Well I just took a look at my old strut mounts with the bearing. It does sound like a good explantion. alltho it looks like the bearings are in perfect shape on mine and i still had the noise sometime. Altho i really only seem to get it at about 50 degree out. I'll have to wait and see if the camber plates have fixed it then.

Good numbers petey...the weather was great yesterday for some dyno pulls. I wish it would have been low humidity and ard 80 when I went. I would have been like 25whp higher. It was like 95 and 100% humidity when I went. What were your numbers for just 93 octane, I didnt see them anywhere?

On straight 93 it was finalized at 300/300 wierd that my Hp caught up to my lb tq but it was super smooth... Al didnt know how to work the electronics on the dyno, so he didnt print out all my graphs.. i imagine they still have them that i can get a copy of all of them..

I tell you what....the nines love to get flashed. I ve read in some cases of 60whp gains with just a flash on a stock nine. I m going back up there to get my boys yellow evo that was parked out front. Did you see that beast? Its going to be a 9 sec Qt mile car. He is bringing it to PRP next wed. Anyways, I m going to get a baseline, on a cooler less humid day than when I went. Plus I m getting meth injection(no water) so i need to get re-tuned. I also am buying SlowboyMR's AEM EMS and getting rid of the power fc. Anyone interested? Petey how many lbs of boost were you running when you made 300/300. It should have said right on the screen.

south park is ***** about test drives. they wouldn't even let me drive one, even with a credit check. biondi was cool about though. i passed the credit check and they had the salesmen drive it off the lot.

if you do decide to get one, talk to Jeff, see if he can still get you that employee discount in spring.

as for jealousy, no. i am glad i didn't wait another minute to get my evo.

Well this is a long and painful story, but I'll tell the ending first because it's the best part anyway...Final run was 307WHP at 21psi falling to 19!

Starting point...No tuning yet - just the base run...Had the meth running, fresh install of Buschur MBC and Buschur cone filter. The MBC had not been touched so we had no idea where we were for boost. It spiked to 25 psi and came back at 247whp and 277tq. (Sorry, this is the only torque number I remember, and as Eric said - Al wasn't giving printouts.)

Al started making adjustments and turned the boost down. 321hp at 22 psi.

Al makes an adjustment, runs it again, but shuts down really fast. Then the moment I dreaded...Had to stop the meth because the AFR's were all over the place. I don't think Al wanted to deal with me any more (More on that later)

More adjustments from Al and to MBC, no meth, and final run was 307 WHP at 21 psi falling to about 19 at redline! I thought it was AWESOME since all I had at that point was the TBE - with hi-flow cat, MBC, and Buschur cone filter, and all on 93 pump gas. He showed me his computer - he was very pleased with it, and showed me there was no knock - which I was very pleased with.

Now to the FUN part! I was supposed to get this all done yesterday. I went up there still needing to install my MBC and wanted someone there to tell me the best place to install. I saw a couple different ways on here, and just didn't know the best way. Well turns out the best way to install required me to remove the fan to get to the lines. So I take the fan out, install the MBC, finish the meth install (just had to tap the intercooler hose and wanted to ask the best place).

I put everything back in, wait my turn (last of the night at this point) and they pull it up on the dyno. Oh crap! Leaking radiator fluid everywhere - I must have punctured it when I was removing or installing the fan. Best they can do is put a Buschur radiator in, but not til morning. Now I'm stuck in nowhere-ville, no car, and no place to stay. So I call a taxi and find a place to stay.

Go back this morning, the car is ready to go, but Al and everyone there is tired of seeing me! I think that's why Al just said the AFR's were just too out of control. He was backed up and I was lucky to get him to squeeze me in, so I didn't complain. Plus the way my luck was running, my engine would have blown up or something

Very exhausting 2 days, and very very nerve racking. Happy with the results for what little money I've spent (except the $428 for a new radiator ) Now I just need to find someone willing to spend the time with me on the meth kit - Al has his agenda and what he wants to do to the cars and spends no time finding out what you did to the car, or what you want out of the tune - wasn't happy with that, but at that point, what am I gonna do? 2 days there as a customer and he can't even take the time to ask my name? Oh well.

I can't wait til I get it tuned for meth!!!
