How much money do you want to spend, and what needs to be done?

Just looking for reputable machine shops in the area to go to when I need anything done. Preferably shops that have done work with 4g63's and imports often. Amount spent is not what I'm worried about, just good quality work. I know people must have good and/or bad experiences with machine shops and was just curious to hear what they were.

I worked with a local machine shop that built the race motors for Cascade Autosports open class EVO rally cars. Although they did good work I found them a little hard to work with. They wanted to upsell me and basically filled out a work order for everything from cleaning and full inspection to fitting and polishing every part. All I really wanted was a decking and boring along with some head work. I had to literally grab the work order and cross things off. All the while they told me I was foolish because I was spending money on nice parts and not letting them do all the work.

Anyway I stood my ground, but it was a battle, and made me pretty uneasy. I still ended up paying for a few things that looking back I shouldn't have but whatever. They did do a good job though. They have a torque plate for boring and honing the block which I doubt other places have for a 4G63, I think it's $250 for that. $100 to degrease and inspect, $100 to deck the block etc.

I spent $1500 for cleaning, boring, and decking the block, along with cleaning the head, doing a valve grind and cut for 1mm oversize valves, facing the head and putting it back together.

I've had similar experiences with Cascade as well - mostly good work, but they seriously dig in their heels if you don't want to follow their recommendations.

Cascade did not do the work, it was an engine machine shop in Kirkland - the same place where Cascade had their machine work done. I just used cascade for a reference because they built a few race motors locally.

I know the Cascade guys pretty well as my friend Ross used to work there, and it's true that Pete the owner likes to do things his way. But he's uber **** and typically does top notch work. But you pay for the time that takes for sure.

If I did it again I would talk to the guys at English and maybe drive down to use the machine shop that works on their stuff. I was hoping to make it easier on me by using a place close by. But the negotiating, and explaining, required was pretty lame. A guy off the street bringing in an import engine for work is tough around here.
