2014 Outlander Sport Questions/Comments

Hi Everyone...I've had my 14 OS Manual for four months and have about 5000 miles on it. I've noticed some interesting and annoying things about it but overall for the $16k that I paid for it I am pretty happy. I wanted to get some input on a couple of things.

First, when the car has sat for a while and I start it up it seems to take forever for the RPMs to stabilize. It runs up to 2k RPMs for a few minutes before it reverts to a normal idle. I try to let it do that before I drive off but sometimes I get impatient. Then if I drive down to the stop sign at the end of the street and push the clutch in it races back to 1500-2000 RPMs. It just seems to me like the idle should stabilize more quickly than this based on the dozen or so other cars I've had in the past.

Second, when my iPhone 5S is paired with the stereo and I am listening to music via the USB connection (usb drive) the music skips if I get a text message or email alert or other notification on the phone. It will keep skipping for a few minutes after too. It seems that if the phone is active in that way it causing music from the usb drive to skip. It's pretty annoying and didn't start until I got my iPhone about a month ago (prior phone didn't cause this problem). Does anyone else have this issue?

Other little things...the glove box rattles...the passenger seat creaks when I have someone sitting in it and I hit the gas or hit the brakes...definitely having that fix that during my next (and first) oil change. My TPMS system malfunctioned about 15 minutes after I bought the car....they had to order the parts and about a month later they replaced all 4 TPMS sensors.

I picked up a fixed mount roof rack (OEM) on Ebay and just a warning to anyone else considering one...it adds a lot of high pitch wind noise! I knew it would add some but not this much. I definitely recommend adding a fairing which I am still shopping around for myself.

I just ordered an HID conversion kit from Maxlux. I'll post an update when I install it.

Overall I enjoy driving the car and average 24-25mpg around town and about 29-30 on my 1 hr 15 min work commute. It definitely prefers warm weather which makes me wonder if adding a cold air intake would do me any good...been considering it. I just wish I could get a K&N filter but they aren't available yet for the 14.

If you have any feedback on my "annoyances" listed above let me know!

I'll take a stab at this -
Try deactivating SIRI, your iphone is most likely taking some bandwidth to relay SMS and emails back to Apple servers for voice dedication (or the like) and it's causing some lag with your music tracks from USB.

Alrighty, so my question is are there loose ammo in your glove box
And, who do you have sitting in your seat?

!
I think it has to do with the angle and the lack of an extra rubber stop when the glovebox is closed. I know mine rattles when its full(manual and other stuff). When its empty no rattles. I am going to see if I can find something to put on the inside where it makes contact with the rest of the dash to tighten it up so no rattles. In theory this should be an easy fix if one can find the best place and something that is flexible yet thick enough to fit.

Just an update....I installed my MaxLux HID kit (5000k) and it's pretty awesome. It was easy to do and only cost about $69 for the kit and relay. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a cheap and easy upgrade. Unfortunately the tailpipe cover I got didn't fit so that was a no go.

Regarding the glove box rattle, find some window and door draft stopper which comes as a foam strip in various sizes. There is adhesive on one side and I applied it to the glovebox along the top edge. It seals the glove box against the dash much better to cut out any noise coming from the glovebox itself. However, after the mod I began to realize there were more rattles behind the dash above the glovebox. From what I've found, I tightened all the screws that I could access from removing the glovebox, but whatever else is causing the rattle behind the dash is beyond me. The rattle only occurs during WOT though so thankfully it's not a constant issue and may be avoided.

Smart. (noted for future reference, if/when needed.)

But, that is odd yall are experiencing those said noises... I have not heard anything either from our previous or current vehicles. Could it be from a loose airbag connector?

I also have a 2014 Outlander Sport ES, but its a CVT auto. Same color though

And I also have the issue with starting. Sometimes if it sits to long, Or even randomly it will have trouble starting. I only have about 3400 Miles on it. This is pretty disappointing for a brand new car. It also runs rough when you first start it after not running fro awhile. (Engine really loud, high rpms, terrible gas mileage)

I also have an issue with random plastic riddling coming form the right side sometimes during take off. Once again to many cheap parts.

They had to replace the weather-stripping on my passenger door after I picked it up off the lot as it sounded like I was driving with the window opened still.

I noticed it has a terrible take off too, and it just seems rather sluggish all around. I think this is part of the trade off for having a crappy cvt engine, that gets good MPG!

And did I mention it’s loud? I mean really loud, like all the time. I just rented a 2013 Chevy Malibu, and it was a base model. the chevy drove as smooth as a cloud and was dead quiet, and I don't even like chevy's.

My next car won't be an Mitsubishi again unless they make some serious design changes in the next edition. Looking to get rid of this within the next year or two. You can’t beat the current pricing though.

I do love the look of the outlander sport though, it looks nice and aggressive compared to other Cuv's on the market.

Welcome to the forum.

And, yes we ALL have seen or been thru some of what you described. The engine is an major issue, but that's the trade off for MPGs.

There are mods you can do to the motor however it's not going to be direct drop-ins for the '14 models. You'll need to do some work to get more HP.

Also, some of us have gone to the trouble to dynamat the interiors to reduce the loud noises.

In the end, like you said it's best looking CUV out there currently (For the low, low price.) Especially when you consider it's the only one with independent suspension, disc-brakes, with Selectable 4WD & Xenon headlights (Optional) + Bonus 10 year warranty.

I agree the lack of power and noise can get annoiying, but nothing a little work can't fix! Like mRVRsport said, it's a pretty well rounded CUV for what it is!

-My dealership fixed my glovebox rattle on their first attempt, without any weather stripping or foam - they just seemed to tighten it in the correct way.

-They also fixed the "behind/above glovebox rattle" by tightening a "slightly loose airbag unit".

-My car turns over an extra time or two if it hasn't been started in a while. I'm not sure I can equate this to "trouble starting" as it never has trouble starting, just takes an extra turn.

-I have an iPhone 5 which I pair via bluetooth, works flawless for me?

- Can't say this car takes any longer to warm up than any of my previous Toyotas or Hyundai, but I will say it is more "vocal" that it's not warmed up yet than my previous cars. This engine has always sounded "raspy" to me - but honestly the sound has grown on me .

For what it's worth, the Lancer with the same engine as our car just got rated as the most reliable car sold in the last 15 years by a leading car warranty company.

Hope this is somewhat helpful.

Also a good strip for the trunk license plate. I found that it would give off an annoying rattle when pulled closed. Place a 1/2" strip from end to end 3m tape on license plate or cover side toward the lowest part of the plate. would solve the rattle.
