4B11 timing chain rattle during the first seconds after engine start
4B11 timing chain rattle during the first seconds after engine start
Good morning,
my first post here, so a few details about myself: I'm Michael, 40years old, born in Germany, now settled in Brazil (near Sao Paulo) and working here as a aircraft technician. I'm enjoying the good weather here and to get around a little bit, I bought (4years ago) a 2014 Mitsubishi ASX (Outlander Sport) with the 4B11, CVT-Transmission and AWD. 132.000km on the odo.
I own a old Toyota Landcruiser as well, which is equipped with a old Mercedes Diesel Engine (4.0Liter, 4 zylinder, 90hp)
And I do all the maintenance myself.
The car (Mitsubishi) worked flawless until 8 Weeks ago. One morning after a couple of days without running, I started the engine and this came: https://youtube.com/shorts/lIjUes9x4js
It was there for about 10 seconds and disappeared. Another 4 weeks without issues and again, the noise came back. For me it was more or less clear, it's the timing chain and some research showed, the 4B11 is robust, the timing chain isn't. But I have a 2014-model, so I thought I have the improved chain.
So I removed all the covers, inspected the chain and tensioner and found nothing: The chain couldn't be lifted from the sprockets, the tensioner was not on it's limit, no loose parts there. The only thing I found was, that when I was cranking the engine by hand, the tensioner moved a little bit in and out (and the guide was moving along with it.)
So I removed the chain, tensioner, guides etc. and inspected the items: all looked good. I reinstalled everthing and turned the engine again by hand: same behaviour of the chain. So I went down to the tensioner and pulled him a little bit out, so that the "going back limitier" came out a little bit more. After that, everything looked good.
Put everything in place, new oil, started the engine and all good. Until now (4 weeks later). This morning the chain was rattling again, less intense, but clearly the chain.
https://youtube.com/shorts/A_vj61VzClw
I accelerated the engine up to 2000min-1 (after like 60s idleing) and the rattling noise disappeared from one second to the other and since then, everything is fine again.
My conclusion so far: The tensioner needs oil-pressure and after the car was not running for some days, somehow the oil in the line is/was missing and it took a while for the tensioner to put pressure on the chain. In the moment I rev the engine a little bit, the oil pressure goes up and the noise disappears.
But where is the problem now and what would you guys recommend to do? My first intention was just to change the chain (and guides, tensioner, etc) but still there is something with the oilpressure, or? Or is this a clear signal, that the chain is gone. Even so, I should have the new version?
Thanks a lot

I rewrote your questions as a Star Wars story-
In a distant digital galaxy, I extend my inaugural transmission. I am Michael, a veteran of forty solar rotations, originally hailing from the land of Germany, but now a resident of the lush terrains near Sao Paulo, Brazil. My occupation: a technician of the skies, tending to the intricate mechanisms of aircraft. As I bask in the embrace of the benevolent Brazilian sun, my wanderlust beckoned me to acquire a trusty steed—a 2014 Mitsubishi ASX, a vessel blessed with the 4B11 heart, a CVT transmission, and the formidable prowess of all-wheel drive. It has journeyed 132,000 kilometers under the watchful gaze of my odometer.
But, my mechanical saga does not end there. In my stable rests an ancient relic—a venerable Toyota Land Cruiser, housing a time-worn Mercedes Diesel Engine, boasting four liters of displacement, four noble cylinders, and a humble 90 horsepower. My hands are the sole caretakers of its well-being.
For years, my Mitsubishi companion traversed these sun-kissed lands without a falter. However, eight cycles of the moon ago, a shadow crept upon its mechanical heart. It began as the dawn broke, after days of respite, when I summoned the courage to awaken the engine. And then, it happened—a sound, as enigmatic as the stars themselves: [LINK].
This auditory specter lingered for but ten fleeting heartbeats before vanishing into the ether. Weeks passed, and tranquility reigned. Yet, the echoes of the celestial symphony returned—a harbinger of uncertainty. To me, it became evident; the force that whispered within the engine bay pointed to the timing chain. Extensive research revealed that while the 4B11 engine stands as a bastion of resilience, its timing chain remains susceptible.
With the determination of a Jedi embarking on a quest, I unmasked the engine, laying bare the mysteries concealed within—the timing chain, the tensioner, and their guiding spirits. I scrutinized each component, hunting for the elusive specter.
Alas, the chain clung steadfastly to its sprockets, as if bound by an invisible force. The tensioner, though imbued with dynamism, offered no evidence of malevolence. It was a mechanical enigma, an elusive Sith Lord.
But my resolve was unyielding. I adjusted the tensioner, akin to a master calibrating his lightsaber. The ASX fell silent, as if it had returned to the tranquil waters of Dagobah. Yet, as is the way of the Force, serenity proved ephemeral. The spectral rattle, though diminished, returned—a mere whisper in the cosmic winds.
With the tenacity of a starship captain navigating through asteroid fields, I contemplated the role of oil pressure—a vital element in this mechanical Force. Could it be that the elusive tensioner yearned for the embrace of hydraulic precision? Was the oil, like a hesitant diplomat, failing to mediate this intricate dance of components?
Now, the tale teeters on the precipice of decision, much like a critical moment in the Galactic Senate. The timing chain, though seemingly innocuous, guards its secrets with the tenacity of the dark side. Oil pressure, the silent ally, beckons for further exploration.
As Michael, the Jedi of mechanical mastery, charts his course, uncertainty looms like the shadow of the Death Star. Yet, one truth remains—his pursuit of vehicular harmony knows no bounds. And within the heart of his ASX, a mechanical Force awaits its awakening, as the saga unfolds in this digital galaxy.

Here it is Robin Hood story style-
In the days of yore, amid the enchanting Sherwood Forest, there lived a gallant soul named Michael. Aged four decades, he was a wanderer born in the distant lands of Germany. Yet, destiny led him to find his sanctuary in the lush woodlands near Sao Paulo in Brazil. His craft? That of an aerial navigator, tending to the majestic birds of the sky.
As the warm embrace of Brazil's benevolent climate enveloped him, Michael yearned for adventure and noble companions. Thus, four turns of the seasons ago, he acquired a trusty companion—a 2014 Mitsubishi ASX, a marvel of modern engineering, powered by the valiant 4B11 heart, guided by the mystic CVT transmission, and fortified with the prowess of all-wheel drive. The gallant odometer recorded its journeys, tallying 132,000 kilometers of daring escapades.
Yet, this tale of mechanized chivalry has another facet. In his sanctuary rested an ancient relic—a venerable Toyota Land Cruiser, its heart housing an aging Mercedes Diesel Engine, bearing four liters of noble displacement, graced by four resolute cylinders, and wielding a modest 90 horsepower. It was under the vigilant care of Michael that its destiny lay.
For years, the Mitsubishi steed gallantly traversed the sun-dappled landscapes, a faithful outlaw of the modern era. However, eight lunar cycles past, a shadow cast its ominous shroud upon its mechanical heart. As the dawn heralded a new day, following days of repose, Michael summoned his courage to awaken the dormant engine. It was then that it occurred—a sound, as enigmatic as the greenwood itself: [LINK].
This auditory apparition lingered for a mere ten heartbeats before vanishing into the mystical ether. The passage of weeks brought respite, but the forest symphony echoed anew—a harbinger of uncertainty. To Michael, the path became clear; the force guiding his hand pointed to the timing chain. Extensive research unveiled the truth that, while the 4B11 engine stood as a bastion of strength, its timing chain remained susceptible to the whims of fate.
With the resolve of an outlaw embarking on a quest to reclaim stolen treasures, Michael unveiled the engine's inner sanctum, revealing the mysteries concealed therein—the timing chain, the tensioner, and their guiding spirits. Each component was scrutinized, much like a forest dweller seeking hidden treasure.
Alas, the chain clung resolutely to its sprockets, as if ensnared by a web of enchantment. The tensioner, though endowed with vigor, bore no signs of malevolence. It was a mechanical enigma, a riddle as perplexing as the ancient oaks of Sherwood.
But Michael's determination was unwavering. He adjusted the tensioner, akin to a heroic outlaw honing his archery skills before a grand heist. The ASX fell silent, as if it had returned to the tranquil glades of Sherwood. Yet, as destiny weaves its intricate tapestry, serenity proved fleeting. The spectral rattle, though diminished, returned—a mere whisper in the winds of fate.
With the tenacity of an outlaw navigating treacherous trails, Michael contemplated the role of oil pressure—a vital element in this mystical tale. Could it be that the elusive tensioner yearned for the embrace of hydraulic precision? Was the oil, like a hesitant nobleman among the merry outlaws, failing to mediate the intricate dance of mechanical components?
Now, the tale stands poised at the precipice of decision, much like the critical moments in Sherwood's clandestine meetings. The timing chain, though seemingly benign, guarded its secrets with the tenacity of the Sheriff of Nottingham. Oil pressure, the silent ally, beckoned for further exploration.
As Michael, the valiant outlaw of mechanical mastery, charts his course, uncertainty hangs in the air, much like the misty glades of Sherwood. Yet, one truth remains—the pursuit of vehicular harmony knows no bounds. And within the heart of his ASX, a mechanical destiny awaits its unveiling, as the legend unfolds in the hallowed annals of Robin Hood's folklore.

Looney tunes style-
In the wacky world of automotive antics,
I'm Michael, a zany character of forty years, born under the wacky German sun but now settled in the hilariously sunny Sao Paulo, Brazil. My day job? I'm an aircraft technician, dealing with flying contraptions that could give Wile E. Coyote a run for his money. But when I'm not chasing roadrunners in the sky, I hit the open road with my trusty set of wheels - a 2014 Mitsubishi ASX (Outlander Sport). Under the hood, it's got the 4B11 heart, a transmission that acts like Bugs Bunny's tricks (CVT), and the AWD feature that's as unpredictable as Elmer Fudd in the woods, all with 132,000 kilometers of zany adventures. But hiding in my garage, I've got a real Looney Tunes special - a Toyota Landcruiser, home to an old Mercedes Diesel (4.0 liters, 4 cylinders, 90hp). I'm the one who performs all the goofy maintenance on that one.
But hold on to your hats, folks, because my Mitsubishi had been as zany as a Daffy Duck cartoon until eight weeks ago. On a morning when the world was as still as a Sylvester the Cat trap, I decided to wake up my mechanical buddy. But instead of the usual engine noise, I was greeted with a bizarre symphony straight out of a Looney Tunes episode: [insert YouTube link].
For ten hilarious seconds, this zany tune filled the air, like a Marvin the Martian ray gun going haywire. Then, just like a Tasmanian Devil spinning off into the distance, it disappeared. Four weeks later, the wacky melody returned, cranked up to eleven, and I felt like I was living in a Porky Pig stutter-fest. The main suspect? You guessed it - the timing chain, even though my 2014 model was supposed to have an improved version.
Like a zany inventor, I tore off the engine's disguise, exposing its inner workings to the light of day. I squinted my eyes and studied the chain and its goofy sidekick, the tensioner. But, lo and behold, there was no ACME rocket in sight, no sign of wacky pranks. The chain was hanging on to its sprockets like a Road Runner running from Wile E. Coyote, the tensioner was as calm as Granny sipping tea, and there were no anvils or dynamite sticks in sight. Yet, as I turned the engine's crank by hand, the tensioner began doing the cha-cha, and the guide joined in for a wacky dance-off.
Determined to solve this Looney Tunes caper, I yanked out the chain, the tensioner, and their cast of nutty characters. As I examined them with a magnifying glass like a zany detective, they were as innocent as Tweety Bird in his cage. So, with the spirit of a Looney Tunes character about to pull a rabbit out of a hat, I put everything back in place and turned the engine once more. But, you guessed it, the chain was still grooving to its crazy tune. I turned my attention to the tensioner, and with the energy of a zany character chasing a roadrunner, I pulled it a bit further, triggering a hidden spring, like a jack-in-the-box popping out. After that, everything seemed normal again, as if the cartoon world had reset itself.
With all the nuts and bolts back where they belonged, fresh oil flowed through their zany veins. I started the engine, and it roared to life like a Tasmanian Devil on a caffeine rush. Everything was calm, like the quiet before a Looney Tunes storm. Until this very morning, four weeks later, when the goofy tune returned, though with less oomph, like a Bugs Bunny joke that's lost its punch. Just like a Looney Tunes character gearing up for a wacky chase, I revved the engine to 2000 RPM after a minute of silence. In an instant, the zany melody was gone, as if Yosemite Sam's temper had finally simmered down.
My conclusion, my fellow Looney Tunes enthusiasts, is this: the tensioner craves the oil's embrace, and after the mechanical buddy rests for days, the oil mysteriously evaporates, like a Wile E. Coyote trap that always backfires. The tensioner, it seems, hungers for the chain's touch but takes its sweet time, like a Looney Tunes character setting up a ridiculous scheme. Only when I rev up the engine's energy, raising the oil pressure like a Looney Tunes gag reaching its climax, does the goofy tune retreat into the Looney Tunes background.
But now, I turn to you, my zany companions in this Looney Tunes adventure. What wacky wisdom do you have to share in this crazy world of automobiles? My initial instinct was to change the chain, the guides, the tensioner, and all the wacky pieces of this Looney Tunes puzzle. Yet, the specter of low oil pressure still lingers, like a Looney Tunes cliffhanger that keeps us guessing. Is this a sign of the chain's fate, even with its supposed improvements? Or do you sense a zanier mystery at play, like a Looney Tunes plot twist waiting to be uncovered in this wacky tale of automotive hijinks?

Hip Hop style-
**Title: "The Mechanic's Mixtape: Under the Hood Chronicles"**
*Track 1: Meet the Mechanic*
Yo, I'm Michael, forty years in the game,
From Germany's streets to Brazil's fame.
Aircrafts by day, I'm the master technician,
But at night, it's the streets I be wishin'.
In my 2014 ASX, I take a ride,
4B11 engine, CVT transmission, worldwide.
132,000 clicks, that's how we roll,
And my Landcruiser's sippin' diesel, holdin' the gold.
*Track 2: The Mystery Unfolds*
One mornin' I woke, the sun's a-risin',
Started my engine, a symphony surprisin'.
A weird tune played, I couldn't believe,
Check the YouTube link, it's hard to perceive!
Ten seconds of weirdness, in the air it lingered,
Like a hip hop beat, but my ride's the singer.
Four weeks later, déjà vu, it's back on track,
The timing chain's the suspect, that's a fact.
*Track 3: Investigation Mode*
Popped the hood, got my tools in hand,
Inspectin' the chain, tryna understand.
Tensioner's chillin', it's a quiet affair,
No loose parts, but it's movin' in the air.
Chain, tensioner, guides, all lookin' fine,
I reassemble, but the rhythm's still mine.
Tensioner's a mystery, movin' without doubt,
So I tweak it a bit, that's what it's all about.
*Track 4: The Hip Hop Revelation*
Fresh oil flowin' like beats in a rhyme,
Engine wakes up, it's its prime time.
Four weeks later, the tune's back in sight,
But when I rev the engine, it takes flight!
Low oil pressure, tensioner's needin' a taste,
Like a rapper cravin' bars, it ain't no waste.
When I hit 2000 RPM, it's the show,
The melody's gone, like a beat in the flow.
*Track 5: The Hip Hop Dilemma*
So here I stand, with a decision to make,
Is it a chain change I need to undertake?
Or is it deeper, the oil pressure game?
In this hip hop story, I'm seekin' the fame.
In the mechanic's groove, I'm droppin' this tale,
In the world of cars, where mysteries prevail.
So, what's the word, my hip hop crew?
Should I change the chain, or is there more to pursue?
