Hi EvoM community,

I'm replacing the clutch but found that the bolt that holds the front subframe crossmember to the body of the car was stripped and doesn't want to come out. I assume it wouldn't be safe to drive but was wondering if it really was unsafe. Also any ideas on how to remove the bolt?

 

Are you referring to the lengthwise member w/the roll stopper engine mount?

If so, that member certainly supports a lot of engine weight but if its still connected I would suppose it is OK until the issue is corrected

Try prying down on the member while trying to remove the bolts attempting to catch some clean threads

 

He can't get the bolt out Joe. I suspect it's the captured bolt with the nut on it spinning inside the chassis that lots of people have issues with.

OP, are you talking about the bolt that goes through the rear of the lower control arm, or the nut, which is threaded onto a stud towards the front of the subframe?

Yea that's exactly what's happening. That bolt just spins; therefore, I can't get the subframe off the car. The best way I can explain what I'm talking about is that this assembly goes from the driver side axles to the passenger side axles. It's also what's directly underneath the center diff

 

No not that one. I meant the one that goes left and right

Yeah, be careful & dont go to the extreme as the latest post did. He dropped a window into the wheel well which may not have been necessary

Try the heavy duty screw driver method first

 

yes the wheel well window was my solution, and it worked. I had tried the screwdriver method however the bolt was still spinning so i had no other choice. Opened it up, put a vice grip on the head of the bolt and got the nut off. Also, even with the vice grips on the bolt, the nut was very hard to spin off the bolt, had to use a 4 foot breaker bar the whole length of the bolt =(

 

Sorry to thread jack but anyone know the part number for the bolt that goes to the chassis for the center member bracket?
