The ONLY thing that makes stem seals go bad is severe overheating.

Must've been floating valves with the 272's and stock springs. Lucky you didn't have a more major issue.

Equally as important: do you know what caused it so it doesn't happen again?

I'm thinking the fact I was revving to 8k with aftermarket cams and stock springs/retainers maybe wasn't the smartest.

That could be bad with a big enough cam.

Used stock valvesprings will start to float on even mild HKS 272's if you push the rev limiter to 8k, and the springs have higher miles on them (like 70-80k).

Best to do upgraded valvesprings with any camshaft install.

The previous owner (original owner) did the 272s. For whatever reason, didn't do springs / retainers while head was off.. oh well.

Nonetheless, lesson learned. And I'm glad it's getting fixed. I'll post a vid of the car for you guys on Wednesday. He's gonna retune the car for me.

Most people used to skip the springs for HKS 272s. But, that was back when these cars had less mileage. Nowadays, I think it's a good idea. Even on a low-mileage car, I would.
That's probably why they didn't do it, though.
