Fun course at Marina yesterday, first time on the Nexens at Marina and they felt great there. Will probably try reducing rear rebound and/or rear tire pressure next time, sometimes the rear end would get loose when I didn't want it to. I ran my 1.5 year old set of RE71Rs in the morning and they took awhile to come alive (it was cold, and they needed a lot of heat to work since they're old), but I just liked the feel of the SUR4G a lot more. I also added a bit more front and rear camber, should help with the edge wear I was seeing.

The car's steering is very neutral but it looks to understeer in the afternoon run..

Hmm, I thought it felt great in the afternoon and it definitely felt pushy in the morning. Are you referring to the top or the bottom video, when you say it's pushy? Also, the data was being a bit weird - you'll notice the speeds are odd on the afternoon video and I was seeing weird line traces when comparing runs on my tablet, not sure if it being overcast had anything to do with the satellites or whatever...

I thought it looked fine - the videos of Xs and RS's are definitely looser but as long as he's comfortable with how the car drives then it works. if it's loose in transitions and pushy in other places it could be a shock adjustment

It felt fine to me, wasn't overly pushy or anything. As for body roll, I didn't really feel anything excessive and the shoulders on the tires looked like they weren't being abused.

Post Nats brain dump:

Drove out there and back with my friend who ran STUL in my car, discovered that the driver side endlink had sheared through its slot on the upper control arm when I swapped from the transport/rain wheels to my competition set. Big thanks to Mike Brausen and his friends for getting her fixed!

Did 4 runs (2 for me, 2 for Kat) on the TnT course, car felt about the same as it did before so I figured we were good to go. During heat 4 on Thursday (STU ran 5th heat, STUL ran 2nd heat), I pulled my car into my grid spot and popped the hood + trunk to recheck my damper settings and noticed that the passenger front strut was leaking oil . I didn't see any oil when I adjusted the dampers earlier that day so it was a pretty fresh leak. During my runs I could feel the car hop a bit in the sweepers and slower elements, but nothing bad enough to where I felt I would have to drive differently. I coned my second run and apparently my first one as well (master sheet in the tent showed no penalty on run 1), but just in case it was legit, I decided not to go for a flyer and ended up going just .015 slower than run 2 (but it was clean). This was good enough to put me into the final trophy spot at the end of day 1, though there was only 5 tenths to 4th place which might have been there if I went for it.

West course

Day 2 was a bit frustrating - I improved each run but the times weren't what I was expecting, felt like I dropped more time than I did but my final run did put me back into the final trophy spot (for like 5 minutes ). I was passed up by both Corvettes that were less than .05 behind me on their final runs and ended up 10/29, not the worst result considering the car wasn't at 100%. East course on Friday was just caked in OPR and made car placement a little more difficult, but everyone in STU had to do it so no excuses there.

East course

Car was really pushy in the slow stuff, especially on Thursday, so I'll be making some tweaks to the car when I get the fixed strut back from MCS + new OEM upper rear control arm. The goal was top 5 in class coming into Nats, so while it was a little frustrating finishing out of the trophies (.021 out of 7th, .011 out of 8th), I was fairly satisfied with the way I drove. Some setup changes for more rotation and tightening the driver nut should help. It seems like most people have written the Evo off in STU, but I'll be looking to prove them wrong in 2018

Thanks for the videos and your break down of nationals.

I have not written off the cars yet either! You will have to give me a few more years before I return to nationals, working on college degree, until then keep up the hard work.

The car is carrying more speed into corners and turning very nicely and tightly.

In both the recent videos the drivers are different ?

No problem, hope to see you out there once you're back!

Same driver (me)

Car feels better in higher speed elements (anything over 35-40 MPH) but the lower speed stuff it just doesn't want to turn, as it is. On the West Course I short shifted into 3rd really early because I hit the second slalom cone right after I went to 3rd during that run, so I decided to get it out of the way early on run 3. In hindsight, I should've just waited a bit later to shift into 3rd (probably after the second slalom cone).

I am no expert but from my experience you need to drop front ride height and see if it turns better in slower corners. If i have noticed it correctly the car feels heavy in slow speed it fights you.. Another question is why you opted for 265s ?
Before these set of rims did you ever tried to auto x on stock factory rims ?

265 is the maximum tire width for STU. Some people have tried 255s on 17s to save some weight and reduce overall gearing, but that's less common.

Factory wheels aren't very useful outside of stock class. They're too narrow. You can still have fun on them, of course, but the ideal 17" wheel size is 17x9.5" on these cars.

Pretty much this. I tried 255s on my 17x9.5" wheels late last year/early this year (not in a back-to-back test, but in back-to-back events) and I was always faster on the 265/18x10 combo.

EDIT: To clarify, I was faster relative to my local/regional benchmarks - obviously wouldn't be faster to the smaller tire/wheel combo if I didn't run it at a particular event :P

I drove with 245s on stock wheels for a few years before building the car for STU, big difference going from stock size to 17x9

17s vs 18s.. Which setup was more responsive in slower speed bends ?
