Overmoderation?

Lately, it seems like many of the forums that I regularly post in are being extremely overcontrolled. Everything is getting locked or deleted. I'm not naming names or anything, but I just want to know - is this a conscious effort or just kind of an evolution of the way the board works?

I had spoken with a moderater about this a few weeks ago and it's actually a conscious effort. They moderating team is doing this while the newer moderators fill the shoes.

It has been annoying me as well because I go to make a post somewhere and then I realize it's been closed. Then when I ask about it, that is closed too before we could ***** it out.

Oh well, I think this is just a phase, just like the lack of moderation almost 4 months ago. I jus thope it ends soon.

I have noticed that too. When I was a mod everything was pretty laid back (especially OT). Now since I left I noticed that alot of the OT threads are getting closed, edited, and deleted far too much. A hands-off OT is more desireable. I mean there are those posts or threads that need to be moved/edited but overmoderation isnt a good thing.

I agree with Kareem, OT should be pretty lax.
My issue is with the main forums. Real threads should not just be closed or deleted at random. I've seen closings with no explanation, deletings, etc. If something is offensive, tell us why or remove it.

But maybe I'm idealistic.

Give us an example please. The reason threads get closed are usually outlined to the individual who started the thread.

Remember just one month ago? Everyone was complaining that this site wasn't controlled enough. We have made a concerted effort to keep things under control and flame free. I think we have accomplished that quite well. But the result will be that members will see locked threads and reprimanded individuals until people understand that the rules are being enforced.

We are holding people to the sites rules now...no exceptions.

And the moderator I spoke with stated that OT is more laid back then the rest of the site, yet whenever you were moderator there were only a few problems here and there, now it seems like people are slightly afraid to post because it may be closed next time they check it.

I don't moderate OT, but AFAIK the only threads that are being closed are threads with inappropriate content (****, personal threats, etc).

I believe you are a moderator... you can go into trash threads and see for yourself. A recent example of overmoderation is Boe's show and shine thread. Due to 1 measly racing post the whole thread was deleted. This probably pissed off Boe (who is an AWESOME contributer to the forums) and a number of other people. Simply delete the offending post and let the thread remain.

I understand people have to follow the forum rules, but being TOO strict is a huge issue. It will make people feel like they are extremely confined and it will discourage new members from joining.

Most of those that were closed in OT were done so at the request of the thread orginator. Or, as SC mentioned, with inappropiate material. Like I said in speaking with BSDJ and Tanner, all you have to do is speak with me if you think something was done "unjustly" (at least in anything I mod)

That is understandable, but deleting a whole thread due to 1 post not even relating to the subject is not the answer. If someone posted **** or a personal thread, delete the offending post and issue a warning. No need to deprive us of a thread just because of 1 person's mistake.

Imagine 1 person says something wrong in the "Attn: Post ******" thread, then the whole thread will be deleted. Lots of people who helped to create it (the OT ******) would be upset.

Boes thread was revived. Consider it a rookie mistake.

If this thread was started because of just one thread that got closed, that's a crazy overstatment to make a general claim of overmoderation. FWIW, I looked in the trashed forum and saw nothing but inappropriate posting....ie advertisements by non Vendors, street racing threads, and stupid newbie crap....no threads that were inappropriately moved off the forums.

Dont worry about it, but i was using that thread as an example (even though it's revived again). I cant search the trash forums so I cant find any other suitable example.

SC - I started the thread. Not over Boe's post, but a general feeling. I just don't like all the padlocks and deletings I see. Obviously, I probably don't see some of the inapporpriate posts because the threads are deleted before I see them. That's the point. But this is just a general feeling all across the boards.
