H.B. 3540 was passed by the Texas house in 2005 with the front plate requirement removed. Unfortunately, the Senate then changed the bill so that front plates are still required.

Here is the relevant section of the Transportation Code. See Sec. 502.404.

On these lines, anyone have a really slick way of mounting a front plate?

A state boy pulled me over about a month ago for no front plate on my Eclipse. He gave me a stern warning and told me that the fine is over $300.

I also heard that front plates werent going to be required any longer. (???)

Front plates absolutly ruin the look of any sports car.

According to that pdf file that ez posted, fine not to exceed $200. I won't put mine on unless I have to...even then, I may pay the fine and just move on. Does suck, though.

It's a $108 fine.....no need to guess how I know! Bought my car in Florida and tried the whole 'I just moved to Texas and my car didn't come with a front bracket' deal but it didn't work. Then again, they were on traffic duty so I know they would've busted anyone doing anything wrong...

I'm constantly gettng pulled over for no front plate. I've yet to pay a fine for it tho. I just find some attorney in the yellow pages and fight it. For now I have suction cups holding my plate in place on the inside of the windshield. When I go somewhere nice with my gal, or I know the valet is going to be right at the front of the restaurant, etc, then I just pop it off and put it back on later. One time I got pulled over when I had it off (but I keep it next to my seat or on the passenger seat when it's off) and told the officer that it had literally just popped off as I was driving...that was actually true that time though.

So if you get pulled over for it and get a ticket, can you just correct the problem (mount the plate in the front) and get the ticket dismissed? Or do you have to pay the fine even if you correct it and show the court/judge?

The charge varies by county/jurisdiction. $200 is the maximum by law (see the pdf).

The ability to correct the problem is also at the jurisdiction's discretion, although they'll almost always let you do it. I think you just have to show proof that you've corrected the problem. And they do usually charge a $10 "court fee" or "administration fee". Same for expired inspection/registration tickets. It does vary, though. Some may not let you do it at all. But at least you don't have to pay the full fine.

I know in Ohio they have the front plate law as well. I had a $82.00 fine when I got a ticket for it. I don't like the look either of the plate but around here they started watching for it. A month before I got the ticket I had a warning for no front plate as well. So now I just put the damn thing on and deal with it.

I've been running around without one for the past few months without a problem. As a matter of fact, when I was stopped for expired tags the cop didn't even mention it. I'll probably put it back on though, thanks for the reminder.

Damn I just noticed a lot of the people responding are from ATX. Man, I wish College Station had this kind of a crowd.

well check it, my brother got a ticket in my car because my car didn't have the front plate. but previously I got pulled over from the same thing and I just told them that I can't put it on my front bumper all due to the intercooler, if they don't get I explain it. then I tell them that I can't put it on my car because there are no holes in the front bumper for it to be mounted, and if they tell me to drill them, the I tell them that if I damage the bumper then the corrosion waranty gets revoked.
I also tell them that the 911 don't have them transam don't have the or the corvets....blah blah blah.
After all that they don't get to say anything, I tell them that the car came like that and that the front plate mount is about $100.

I have told them that before and they just gave me a warning. Now I just have it with small suction cups on the top of the passengers' side.
