The evoRED and ME....

First off WOW! I just got back from my first drive with the evo red on.... I spent two days perfecting, porting, more porting, oh did I mention porting.... and on the first shake down run I am very very impressed.

Currently the car is on e85, which is amazing stuff. The car pulls all the way to my 8k rev limiter. With the stock turbo, the car pulled very hard but I could always tell when I was getting close to my rev limiter because the power would level off and it didnt pull as hard... I did a pass tonight 2nd 3rd, 4th with the RED and I hit the rev limiter on every shift, the car just continues to pull, and pull hard. I have a lot of tunning to do still so there is more to come. I can't really comment on spool up, I was very happy with it, however I know it can/will be much better because for safety on my first time out with the new turbo, I set the waste gate to be partially open during spool up so I didnt get any crazy 50psi spikes or anything like that.

over all very impressed! More to come as I get everything worked out. I cant wait to look over my logs tomorrow at work

PS If you are thinking about upgrading turbos, Im almost convinced the RED is the best option on the market.......Ill elaborate on that more as I get everything all sorted out.

I ported the outlet of the turbine, there was some sharp edges and some peaks and valleys that I didn't like, and I probably didn't gain much from it, but I couldn't put it back together know they where there. I also ported that area to match up with the o2 housing and transition smoothly from the turbine .... I match ported the stock manifold to the gasket and the hotside of the turbo. I wish I would have taken pictures of everything, but I get all excited and don't think about pictures :-) I'm going to have to take everything back apart to fix an issue with how my DP and my o2 Housing mate.... Ill take pictures then.

Heck I'd be up for a dyno day... just so I could see what the upgrades have gotten me.

porting an exhaust manifold is 50. denver can chime in how much it is to port the hotside like he did. i don't know how much time he spent on it, but from what it sounded like, it wont be cheap

Ok Ok Ok update...... I am back on the 93 pump gas because I went to MSR this weekend and logistically it seemed/was considerably easier to manage b/c there is no e85 stations close to the track.

After three clutches, and prepping mine and Kevin’s cars for track day, I didn’t get much time for tuning, but I got everything running OK on 93. I will be finishing out my 93 tune before I go back to e85. I kept things on the rich side and low boost and low timing just to stay safe at the track. I ended up running between 25 to 27psi during the track day with no issues. From what I could see I had zero boost tapper (with my spot check in the straights) and was very pleased with that, George said he could always tell I was coming out of the last corner into the front straight because I would touch the rev limiter every time I exited that corner. The car has a completely different top end. There is NO fall off on power, it continues to accelerate all the way to 8K and I’m sure will continue past that when I raise the rev limiter (again wanted to stay safe at MSR) I was faster than every car in my group on the straights expect KEVIN! I topped out over 100mph on the front straight and I had several 115 and 120mph passes. I was very happy with the power, and I know it has more in it still.

In terms of spoolup, I’m not going to lie, I do notice the difference between my stock 8 turbo and the red, however I would in NO WAY describe the red as being laggy. I always have full boost by 4k rpm if not earlier. I'm going to work on a few things and see if I can improve that more. I think the difference is, the stock turbo doesn’t really make any boost until it make full boost, it’s almost a digital on, then it tappers off as RPM increases. With the red, you can hear and feel the boost ramp up to full boost to 4k then it holds all the way till you take your foot off the gas. (I don’t really know how to describe it, but if you want a ride, I’ll be more than happy) I think this is a VERY well sized turbo for this engine. If your goal is to have a stock configured car with high HP, then IMO this turbo does the job perfect. It has been very street able, and performed beautifully on the track. It offers a broad power band due to the early spool up and zero tapper. Are you going to go out to the "drag strip" and kill someone with a 35r or what not, NO (unless you can make it to the end before they spool up :-) ) , but you will for sure be competitive. We'll see maybe I can get more out of still if I ever get time to go get some good tuning in..... Kevin didn’t pull away from me like I was standing still that’s for sure!

I guess thats where I am now; need more tunning, but definitely liking what I’ve seen so far.

Oh by the way, make sure you ask Kevin about his "HIGH END" AutoZone Padds!!!

a well set up and tuned red will kill a 35r car on a road course. I can't wait till next time we can show kevin what I mean by that
