New Quartermaster Street/Strip Clutch Is Out!!
#32
Sorry to bump an old thread, but I was curious to see how the OP still liked his Twin.
I have the race clutch in mine now, currently about 18-20k miles on it. Still grips like F***, but since about the first 2 weeks from the install to current day it makes a horrible screeching noise from first gear engagement and is very very difficult to use for a daily clutch because of how hard it grips.
I can take a video of it anytime if there is still interest in the clutch.
Anybody else got some input on theirs making the same noises??
OP???
Thanks

Cool! Thanks for the input. I may get the go pro out this weekend and just take a video of the dying whale noise from engagement, then show everyone how fast you can shift with this clutch in. Thats what makes it 100% worthwhile in my opinion is the shiftability.

Two nights ago, I drove droppinbottom's Evo 8 with a fresh street/strip 8-leg. It rattles with the clutch pushed in, and it rattles on decel. The decel rattle gets progressively louder at higher and higher decel rpms. It gets amazingly loud when decelling from 6000-7500 rpm. It also barks and squeals on clutch engagement. This definitely ain't a quiet clutch. Its louder than a new Exedy twin I drove a few years ago on another Evo 8.
Clutch engagement is fairly abrupt for daily driving. I only drove it for about 20 minutes, and by the time I was done, I could engage it from a stop reasonably well about 50% of the time. It did chatter a few times during engagement (but so does my stock clutch). I could see adapting to it, but I think I would have to focus every time I wanted to take off from a stop. Taking off on a steep hill would be a serious challenge.
Good news is that pedal pressure is only slightly heavier than stock. I didn't even think about pedal pressure until droppinbottom mentioned it. EDIT: And it shifts great. Zero perceived drag, and it bites shockingly hard when released quickly.

My street/strip 8-leg is noisy everywhere but when engaged with my foot on the throttle. I have all 4 Torque Solution mounts so I'm sure it exaggerates the sound. It does sound like a whale when the pedal is released in 1st, and when I downshift without rev matching. It allows me to shift much better than my old ACT HDSS, and grabs much harder. After about 500 miles, I feel much better about hills and leaving from a stoplight slowly. I've stalled it several times recently pulling into my garage, but I'm sure I'll get used to it. For a 500 hp daily driver like my car used to be, I think I'd stick with the ACT. At higher power levels, I would without a doubt choose this over an extremely stiff pressure plate single disc puck clutch. This is my first twin disc so I can't compare it to the others.
