E85 / Ethanol Effects?
E85 / Ethanol Effects?
So, all this talk of flex fuel vehicles and Ethanol usage leaves me with a few questions...
I realize that to run E85 you have to modify your fuel system so that it won't be melted by the Ethanol. However, if it's a higher octane does that mean that it would be like running a race gas blend? Or will it just make a whole lot less power, as I suspect? Not that I'm planning on converting the EVO or anything, I'm just curious.
Also, there is a lot of talk about Ethanol being increasingly added to existing gasolines, does that hurt or help in regards to a car like our EVOs?

E85 is roughly equivalent to 105 octane, however it isn't as efficient as gasoline so you'll use about 30% more of it (fuel efficiency will go down). There are also some changes to the fuel system needed.

i agree but you do get charge cooling with the fuel and you need about 30% more due to the BTU differences i run it in my honda with no problems and all i did was retune hondata with 720cc injectors and a 255lph pump.

As for E85, since they wont let us use alcohol injection in SCCA autocross events I was thinking about running E85 next year. It would have to be way cheaper to run that than the C-16. Plus I could put my catalytic converter back on to quite it down a bit. From your experience do you think, properly tuned, that E85 will make power somewhere in between pump 93 and VP C16?

But the cool thing is it has oxgen in the fuel and as said above it charge cools just like the alcohol injection does. Even with out the cat i think with e100 you will meet smog if they tested . . .
Thanks for the info. BTW, I will be down at DRSCCA's solo school and season opener all this weekend. PM me if you want to stop out Saturday or Sunday. I'll give you a ride in the silver bullet.
