Water injection as intercooler replacement?

This isn't Evo related at all, but this seems to be the most active water/alky injection forum I can find.

Late next year, I'm going to be picking up an early 70's KGC10 Nissan Skyline. It's got an L20 engine in it, but the RB25DET swap is fairly straightforward, just custom motor mounts.

Where the problem comes in, is with the design of the car, installing a front mount intercooler involves cutting into the car quite a bit, something that I'm not really interested in doing in a 40 year old Skyline.

So the RB25DET runs about .7bar stock with a side mounted intercooler. If I had no intercooler, and instead ran a water injection setup, could I maintain stock boost? Or even possibly bump it up to about .9bar? My power goals aren't huge, maybe 260rwhp.

I've ran water injection on an Evo before, but that was in conjuction with an intercooler. This setup will be pure water injection.

Note: Methanol is a controlled substance here in Japan, so I can't get it. Closest thing I could get would be Denatured Alcohol or rubbing alcohol.

Any help on this would be appreciated!

Denatured Alcohol can be used - it is just a mix of ethanol and methanol.

One of our customers has a Nova making about 1200hp with Procharger at 30psi of boost. No intercooler, just two large nozzles for the meth injection. Car will do under 7.5s 1/4mile. have some pics and video if you like I can post.

Best regards,

Dan

One thing is to install water injection with denatured alcohol (if meth is regulated in JPN) and other thing is to install a air-water intercooler...
I like both :-)
To avoid cutting your car, try to find a air-water intercooler that will offer the possibility to have a remote radiator in a more convenient place into your car....
Cheers,

did you check out the waterinjection.info forum, the one on the aquamist site.

There are a couple posts on there about people replacing their intercooler.

It can be done for sure, but you will need lots of water/meth (whatever you choose).

The mixture will greatly depend on where you are located and the season. For hotter more dry areas closer to 100% H2O will be the choice because it will evaporate and remove more heat. In colder more humid areas H2O will not evaporate as easily, so use 50/50 or 100% alky to cool the charge down.

As dudical26 said plan on using a lot of "injection fuel" to effectively cool the charge down. Also if you do plan to use more methonal, try to use Stainless piping to avoid corrosion. Although corrosion will still happen with alky.

Another option is look to switching if your able to E85 fuel, it naturally colder than gas and will aid with the higher octane. Although in Japan I believe your blessed with 100 octain or so from the pump!

Good Luck with your build!!!

There's a guy with an Evo 3 with a Devil's Own kit running stuff from Okinawa. I will have my kit on my Move next year sometime, but what I can get on the mainland and what you can get on the island are totally different. I can send you a link if you are interested in what can be found on Okinawa. You will likely find 75% meth 25% eth, or 95/5%. Distilled water can be bought at a Jusco in the contact lens area, and if you are lucky enough to get to the mainland, the winter formula washer fluid can get up to 45% meth for ¥175 per 2 liters.

I know that with the traffic and temps in Okinawa, a TMIC would be all but useless most of the year. SMIC may be different, but I think for the power you are looking at, you should be okay with just WI if you can tune your kit.ICs only work if you are moving, and most of my driving, at least on Honshu is less than 60 kmph, so the TMIC on mine is more of a TMIH.

He just needs to turn on the trigger point earlier....thats where IDC mirroring helps.
