Timzcat is both very right and slightly wrong! Unless CA has some kind of tax monopoly that no other state has, then you can pay your tax in GA. They can still provide you with a temporary tag reguardless. By law they have to!

I work for a dealer in Texas... I could be wrong or California could have some crazy rules, but that is what I was told from our titling office!

Hope this helps,

Best regards,

I thought you got a temp tag, because its just that, A temporary tag. I always thought that you paid the Tax on the vehicle in the state that you register it in. So if i flew out and bought a car form Mark i'd get a temporary tag, drive it back to MN, register it here in MN and pay tax, title and License. Getting taxed in Cali then in MN is like Double Jeopardy.

I could be wrong about this, and its evident i don't work for the DMV, so please don't flame me.

**EDIT**

Yeah, what Mark said. You beat me to it. You must have posted as i was typing mine...

Hey, Im just here to keep it real and honest! LOL! The salesperson from that dealership may not have known the policy regarding this! Then again this is based on what my dealerships license and titling department researched and told me. If you are paying double taxes then someone is making some extra money! LOL!

IF I am wrong...flame on! I deserve it!

Best regards,

Sorry, but I am still confuse...Pay tax in california based on which state? If california, what address are you gonna put on the registration. If it is based on the buyer's state address, how will you know the amount of tax to collect? Which also means, the buyer's tax rate might be either higher or lower than Cali.

The dealer here, would have the buyer sign a form stating that he is out of state or county, and have the buyer pays the appropriate tax when he register the vehicle at his residing county.

So are you saying that you guys have access to their states tax rates and you are going to have them pay their taxes at your dealership?

Im not from CA nor have I really ever spent any time looking into your laws and rules regarding the titling of automobiles.

In TX you choose where you want to pay the taxes to... if you are registering in the state of TX you pay TX taxes and if you live outside of TX and are registering the vehicle outside of TX then you pay taxes in your (the state you are registering in) state. There is a form...

It seems that what you are still suggesting is that they pay taxes in CA and title the vehicle there as well.. then when they get home they get a big suprise when their DMV says... now you have to pay taxes here and register here in GA....

You see where Im coming from...

Can anyone post a copy of CA tax and registration laws for the forum members to read (your titling clerk should have a copy you can scan and post here)?

Best regards,
