Exclusive EVO price Offering
Hi to all
Here's the answer to all your question....
I just spoke to our DMV lady....
Option 1
If you are planning to drive your car back home you will have to pay the California sales tax based on a 7.75% tax rate and you will get a one way tag for your car, then one's you get to your state you will have to go directly to DMV and register your car and you have to pay them just the lic and registration, you dont have to pay them tax anymore.....
Option 2
If you put the car into a trailer then you wont have to pay any tax or lic here in California you will pay those one's you get to your state.....
Hope this answer all your questions ..
Thank You

That's the strangest thing I have ever read. I would contact your local state's DMV as well as CA DMV and get the straight answer.
Not trying to flame you Mark. In fact, I plan on calling you this weekend after I check out the new Evo 9 at a local dealer.
Thanks,
Hong

Here's how it works:
1. If you paid cash for the car then CA DMV will send you a certifcate of title and then you can title your car at where you lived.
2. If you financed your car then your lender will send you a letter and a copy of certifcate of title so you can register your lender as lien holder at where you lived.
Regardless of how you paid for the car, you will need a "a way ticket" to drive your car back home. Now, either your dealership can take care of that for you (mine did) or you can go to CA DMV and do it yourself. It was pretty cheap anyway, like $20 or $30 the most.
So no, you don't need to pay CA tax if you don't lived there.
And yes, you get to drive your new car home.

I have talked to both CA and TX DMV before I bought my car and they all told me the same thing. You title your car at where you lived, not where you bought your car from.
It's best to call your local DMV "AND" CA DMV to find out for yourself since different state might have different rules or something.
Good luck
Oh btw Mark, nice prices you got there. You will be hearing from me soon.
Thats what i said you have to title your car to your own state all you have to pay in CA is your tax...
Guys im just posting the best of my knowledge here...

I personally know that Santa Monica Mitsubishi has sold a ton of Evos to us hawaii guys, and they take it right down and put it on the boat for us and don't charge is any sales tax at all, its our responsibility to pay sales tax to the state of Hawaii when we get it (and i personally don't know any that have, but I know we're suppose to)

As matter of fact you don't need to pay CA DMV anything except for the one way ticket.
tax is not collected until you title the car. if you don't title the car in california, you don't pay tax in california. plain and simple. if you title the car in ca, you pay tax there. you can't title the car in ca if you don't have an address.
if the dealership collects 7% tax, they will just keep it, since they will not title the car for you if you are out of state( know that some do, but I doubt very highly if these guys do since they don't know anything about the process).
think about it. when you buy a used car private party, you get the title and a bill of sale. you then go to the dmv and pay tax and title transfer. that is when you pay tax. if you buy a used car in ca, same thing, you don't pay tax until you get to your home state and title/register the car. same concept for new cars, you are just dealing with a dealership/business instead of joe schmoe.
theoretically, you can buy a car and never pay tax on it, but only if you never title or register the car.
what the dealer is stating above is partially true about the trailer, but you can get a temp tag from ca and that will be your one-way out of the state same as a trailer.
this is exactly what we did when we purchased our evo out of state.

Even in California (And I'm assuming it's like this in other states), you don't pay taxes where you buy the car, it's where you title your car.
For Example, me. I live in Ventura County. I pay 7.25% tax, even if I were to buy in Los Angeles County, where the tax rate is 8.25%.
