Provo city police department was recently under investigation for exercising excessive force. I read an article on it and it was very intresting. IMO it seems that police are falling from the category of "protect and serve" to "demean and harass". [b]Though this may be a nessisarry step in keeping control of skyrocketing crime rates and violence amonst communities, it is a poor situation either way.[b]
There is a strange phenomenon among the public when it comes to perceptions about crime. If you ask just about anyone, they will tell you that crime rates are continuously going up and perceived safety is falling year after year. This makes sense when you look at the newspaper, evening news shows on TV, or the front-page of KSL. All of the above news sources always highlight tragedies and crimes.

Politicians don't help, as the "tough on crime" stance is a sure-fire crowd pleaser. No politician would get very far with a platform of relaxing our laws or diverting funding from police forces to education, for example. This is one of the reasons the United States has the highest documented incarceration rate (includes probation, parole, etc.) in the world.

But when you look at crime statistics, they tend to be relatively unchanged or even declining since the 90s. Property crimes in particular are on the decline here in Utah. I would argue that we don't actually need to keep expanding the power of our police force. It's always better to use the power and funds more wisely, though. Undercover Mustang GT cop cars? Definitely not helping to remind everyone on the road to slow down and drive safe, but it's going to be fun for the police to drive and a definite source of ticket revenue.

In short, I agree that there is a mindset transition among our police force away from "protect and serve" and more toward "us vs. them". It's unfortunate, too, because everything tends to work better when we're all on the same side. But when police are out searching for reasons to write traffic citations, suddenly the general public becomes the "them" in this equation.

Of course, it's not fair to generalize. There are plenty of excellent police offices who go above and beyond the call of duty day in and day out. I'm infinitely grateful to these people. I think the perception problem comes in to play when I do try to follow the letter of the law (exactly 65mph on I-15, 2 seconds at every stop light, etc.) and still get pulled over by the bad-apple cops looking for any reason to search my car or write me a ticket.

Anyway, rant mode off. Sorry for the short novel.

+1

I can do almost anything in my POS truck (speed, use my blinker for 1 click, etc) and I am not looked at twice by any local police officers, but the moment I'm in a high performance vehicle, suddenly I'm being tailed, plates are being processed, and my every move is being observed... I have been pulled over for a "dim" oem licence plate light and then given a demeaning run down on how street racing is illegal and "when you (directed at me) get caught, your vehicle will be impounded". WTF??? So now I am a street racer I guess.. Because I drive an Evo. Anyone else want to be a supposed "street racer"? Haha. If not, too bad. You are already profiled as one.

Same, I was parked at a local gas station on halloween waiting to pick my brother up and a cop rolled up and said (I had california plates on, bought car on thursday) "I dont know how you do it in california but WHEN I catch you racing im ganna bust your a s s and make sure you never get your car back" mind i hadnt said one word " he continued to quiz me about various laws and such then told me i better get scootin if i dont want a loitering ticket." I hadn't had the car more than four days and im already a red light on the radar without doing anything. I just sold a 07 WRX that was visually more aggressive than my VIII and i never got anything more than a nod from the local PD.

Still on maf. I will send you the scaling tonight. They start like stock but I have them running a bit lean for fuel conservation

Nice buy! Trucks/SUV's are awesome. My mom has a denali and it's an absolute dream to drive. If I could only afford to pay for the gas lol.

I'm surprised to hear (read) someone in the car performance world say that. I absolutely HATE Trucks and SUVs. The only thrill I get out of any of them is being able to do U-Turns over meridians and driving off/over curbs. Otherwise I hate the feeling of driving a big floating boat.

Not to say I don't see the purpose behind them and it would be great to have one for a lot of reasons. But I certainly don't think they are awesome.

All the tq in the world and feeling like you're sitting on top of it.
