Oh contrare young padawon, ive been to the state referee twice in san bernardino, and ive also had to smog my car twice....at the state ref for modified exhaust never said anything about the gauges to me, the tech was kinda in awe with my car haha..i had to go back twice cuz it was too loud had to put stock downpipe and cat on, still didnt pass by 2dbl, had to swap in a silencer for my recheck. As for my smog test I just took it to a guy I knew, attempted to smog it without a cat on there for a pre check just to see how close it would get, at 3500rpm i was off by 40ppm hc...haha...so yea i do know what im talkin about, you goin into the smog shop or state ref like a scared kitten the coyotes will tear you apart, you go in there by nice but stand your ground, theyll be cool with you.
So back to what I was saying, yes I do know what im talkin about, if they give you trouble about the gauges you tell them like i said " I bought the car used and it had these gauges on it already." end of story, they cant give you **** if you bought the car used and it had the gauges on it already, like I said theres nothing illegal about having gauges other then cops or state ref profiling you as a street racer. I have a steering wheel column pod with boost on the left and afr aem wideband on the right.

ummm yeah they can bought my car used with all the mods it's not a excuse that works if the place is ****. The stupid act doesn't always work, I've gotten away with it before but got called out last time, it sucks and is expensive when they pull that kind've crap.

When they want to bust you for something they will "end of story" I'd just go in with less stuff on the car to draw their attention to the possibility of the car being modded.

The ref that did my car also liked it (worked with mostly sti's) and we talked about his 8sec vega. He did make it very clear on the gauges though, mainly the AFR, most exhaust shops won't even weld the bung in because they can be fined for exhaust mods. The law is a ****ty thing when they want to use it.

In any case I'm not out to start a pissing contest with anyone about info that was presented to me as fact by the state. People should know what they are getting into, having a little info can go a long ways, not just telling someone "everything will be fine" it's an expensive ordeal when things go bad.

BTW I'm most likely older than most members on here and have two kids, young is something I haven't been called in a while...thanks bud!

I've decided that stealth is the best course of action, so good bye A pillar, hello zeitronix w/ LCD screen....this will monitor boost, A/F R, and anything else id want, or I could go with the HKS Camp2, since i already have a double dinn and relocation kit in place.....about 500 to 700 is worth passing a smog.....

Youngster! I think I've got you beat by a couple years. I get that "weird old man driving a kids car" look from people quite often.

yea it does but luckily havin worked in the automotive field for the past 5 years, at a couple different shops i got to know a lot of local law enforcement, and since i hooked them up with discounts on needed repairs, they would always ask me about my car and what not, and sometimes would take them home while there cars were being repaired. And told them if they see me on the street if they could go easy on me and not pull me over unless i was doin somethin wrong, so they spread the word, and luckily *knock on wood* none of there fellow officers have pulled me over. haha

Post The California Smog Law(s) Thread [MERGED]

Regarding the STAR system:

http://castarstation.com/star-advantage/

Hi guys,

There's a possibility that I might be relocating from Illinois to the San Francisco area for work soon, and I'm concerned about my Evo and my wife's WRX; in particular, the mods I'll need to roll back to avoid issues with local law enforcement and smog testing. (Two major fault lines, and CARB...awesome. At least the weather is great compared to Chicago. )

Looking over the requirements on the DMV website, it looks like I have 20 days from the day I start work to get the car registered in CA. However, I won't have my tools with me or a shop to work in, so I'll need to prep the car before driving there (or fly out and get by without the car for a while, but that just postpones the problem until my wife moves out with me).
  1. Has anyone else here gone through the process of bringing their car (particularly a modified Evo) into California that could share what they'll be looking for during both the DMV and smog inspections, and how detailed they'll be?

(I've removed, but kept, most of the emissions-related equipment from the car; if I can avoid reinstalling it, I'll be a happy camper, but am prepared to reinstall most of it if strictly necessary.)

  2. I still have the original airbox, and the original downpipe and cat with an aftermarket catback and "silencer" (which should keep things welll under 95dB). While it appears that I'll be legal at that point, how does local law enforcement typically treat drivers with aftermarket catbacks? Any city/county ordinances I should watch out for?

  3. Other mods: I need to track down a stock-appearing LICP, apparently. Has anyone had issues with a visible GM IAT sensor in the manifold? GM BCS? (See above about how detailed the visual inspection will be?) At least my wideband looks like a stock rear O2 sensor.

  4. I've read stories of law enforcement pulling people with modified cars over and performing roadside visual inspections; anything in particular that they might be looking for that I should be aware of, other than the vague feeling that my rights are being violated?

  5. How is the supply of E-85 around SF? USDE says there's a couple of stations in Oakland, Hayward and Fremont have one each, and there's a few around San Jose; does that sound right to folks in the area? (I suppose I should take the Flex-Fuel emblem off the trunk?)

  6. My rear and rear-side windows are tinted; the front driver's and passenger's windows aren't. The CHP answers website seems to say I'm good on this front; again, is this something folks have been hassled about in the past, or should I assume it won't cause problems? (This is actually hilarious; I'd been tracking the passage of the new Illinois tint law that allows front window tint, and the local PDs that were continuing to issue tickets about it in violation of state law. I was planning on re-tinting the whole car this summer. )

  7. Is CA a two-plate state? (We are here in IL, so I'm already suitably equipped; just curious about this one.)

  8. Any general advice? Things I might not have thought of?

Bah, it should not be this hard to move a car from one state to another.

(Now I get to figure out how badly this move might screw me at tax time. )
