fuel filter

i'm just wondering if anyone knows where the fuel filter is located at on our car? when i'm just driving down the road my car will kinda hesitate for about a half a second and i can't figure out what the hell it is. any opinions on what this might be would help. also do you think if i had someone hook up to my car computer that it might help, i mean none of my lights of gone off so i'm not sure where to start with this. thanks

I can't find a mention of it in the service manual, but I'm pretty sure it's inside the fuel tank, attached to the fuel pump. However, the filter is probably designed to last 50k-100k miles, so that's probably not your problem.

To access the pump, if you want to check, remove your rear seat cushion and you'll see the access panel.

Just so you know i had the same prob on my 2001 neon R/T. I thought the same thing too. It turned out to be fouled spark plugs which trust me is a lot easier to correct than any thing on the fuel delivery system.

PS on most late model cars from mitsu/chrysler the fuel filter IS mounted in the fuel tank atached to the top of the fuel pump.

Mitsu designed access under the seat? Most cars make you drop the tank to access the pump.

I would check your spark plugs... I know they are supposed to last a long time but if you drive hard they won't last as long...

Yeah, there's a panel you remove and then there it is.

The more I think about it, I seem to remember someone mentioning that we have a permanent fuel filter, like a little mesh baggie attached to the inlet of the fuel pump. Somebody go pull theirs out and show us.

Pretty much all cars will have that little mesh baggie thing. And any fuel injected car has got to have some sort of high filtering filter. Doesn't take a very big chunk of **** to clog an injector. I bet our main/replaceable filter will be along the sides of the car somewhere, or wherever the fuel lines run, maybe under the hood.

Much agreed. It should look like a little cylender with a nipple on each end about an inch or so long.

Both fram.com and autozone.com are telling me that there's no replacable fuel filter (non-serviceable)

I can't find any mention of a fuel filter in the service manual.

EDIT: I just called my dealership, the fuel filter is located in the tank and is non-serviceable. So it seems that to replace the fuel filter, you must replace the pump assembly.

That's f-ed up. Then again, I wonder how many complaints they got about how difficult it was to change the fuel filter on a DSM. I remember a few people out by me ended up cutting the fuel lines and putting on new fittings, because they couldn't get the original fittings loose.

Good to know, though, in case the dealership ever tries to tell me they changed my fuel filter as part of regular service.
