ralliart speed sensor or cluster problem
Hi guys i have a problem my speedometer start going crazy up and down in the speed today it just stop working so i dont know what speed im going i put it to read the code and it said the speed sensor was bad but doesn't said witch one in or out.... i have a friend that know mechanic and he thinks is the cluster not working right .... how can i check if is the cluster or sensors .. and how do i check witch sensor is it , the input or the output thanks a lot in advance
no the speed dont move no more its on zero all the time and i talking about the
output shaft speed sensor or input shaft speed sensor i would like a way to check witch is bad or is the cluster is bad

as far as i know there is only one sensor. the speedo sensor is not on the output shaft, but actually runs off the differential. the other sensor on the transmission that is near the input shaft is actually on the reverse idler gear, and it switches your reverse tail (white) lights on. This is what leads me to believe the tach and speedo are run by the same sensor, let me verify the diagrams and see if i can confirm this unless someone else knows for sure.
That is why i asked if your tachometer (RPM) gives you an accurate indication.

Damn i always forget to ask, you have automatic transmission? that is why there is confusion. Auto trans has output shaft speed sensor, manual runs off the diff. either way, there should only be one sensor for speed/rpm, and one for reverse tail lights. By the way the diagram looks, the control circuit for your RPM and speed gauges receives inputs from your ECM and speed sensor, but the speed sensor i would assume is used to read both RPM and vehicle speed. So if the Tach works then it's probably you cluster that is busted, and it is more than likely an integrated circuit and can not be repaired easily on your own, or even separeted from the assembly for that matter. I would ask the dealer, only because you may want to retain an accurate odometer. otherwise you can just swap the cluster with one that works. I'll check if each gauge is an interchangeable module for you.
I can't find a separate part number for individual gauges, but someone else might be able to tell you, i've never had my cluster out.

now you got me thinking. since the control circuit in the cluster gets its input from the ECM as well, it's possible that the RPM is driven by a signal from the ECM, that is initially detected by another sensor, like crank angle sensor/cam angle sensor, or something like that...If that's the case, i would do what i originally suggested, pull the speed sensor (closer to the firewall, under the shift cables) check that the plastic gear is not damaged, and replace the sensor. the sensor is only like 50$ and i have a spare speedo gear and shaft for the sensor, i'll mail it to you for free if yours is damaged, it's a separate part from the sensor itself.

the sensor you talking about is the one that has the white gears on the bottom ? Is the one in the transmission right... Do you have any link where i can purchase the sensor or i should go to the dealer and buy it ... Whats the spedo gear and shaft ???? Thanks in advance if i do need them your been so help full =)

I'm actually home right now, and i'm using a lite version of Linux from a USB drive so i can't get you the part number for the sensor until monday, but mitsubishiparts.net had good customer service so far, i got all my parts there. You can get it from the dealership as well.

crikboy I know this is an old thread, but I have the same problem. I have a 2006 Lancer ES m/t and the RPM's work fine but the speedometer and odometer aren't working. I've replaced the VSS but still no speedometer. Have you gotten yours fixed since this post?
I replied to your PM, with advice that was already in this thread...sorry.
anyway, RPM I don't think comes from the vehicle speed sensor so if, both are not working, I would think the problem is either in the wiring, or the cluster itself...
