04 5-speed RA trans question

ive been having a noise from the trans for the last few months, ive come to the conclusion a few weeks ago it's sither the throwout bearing or the input shaft bearing(maybe both)...

does aybody know how much approximately it costs to rebuild a trans(04 5speed RA)..?(just looking for ballpark guesstimate, i'm not trying toget an exact quote just yet)

i'm a mechanic so i can pull the trans at work and keep the car there while it's apart...ive asked our trans rebuiler(3rd party) but he only works on automatics from european luxury cars..(jag, audi, benz, etc), and in our shop we dont have any tools necessary to do this kind of work, nor do i know anybody w/ the tools...

i figured while it's open for @ least the 1 bearing, i'd also get a new clutch, all new bearings and maybe new synchros JIC(car's got 140 kmi and OE clutch)...(and in my dreams i'll drop in a LSD and maybe a mirage final drive gear too...but im sure that'll be way more $ and trouble than im willing to spend for just my DD)

i found a few clutch kits online, does anybody know if theese are good?..(im just trying to stay similar to OE on the clutch...nothing too crazy or expensive..)some quick google shopping results listed only...if anybody knows anything else good but not too expensive please let me know..)

exedy full disk kit(part # W0133-1820614)
act hd 6-puck kit(part # MR1-HDG6)
act hd full disk kit(sku# ACT-MR1-HDSS)

hopefully i can do this within the next 6 months to a year...(and hopefully i dont damage the trans too much till then..lol)

also i think i read somewhere the eclipse clutch fits 04 RA's...does anybody know for sure..?

Look this over, it's confidence inspiring.

http://www.mivec.co.nz/tech/F5M42_Gearbox_Manual.pdf

I am sure you have access to a press, that leaves you needing a bearing splitter which can be had for under $50.

LSD $900 shipped from
http://www.phantasmusa.com/w76309180wk.html

For the clutch http://clutchmasters.com has some options, I see them available for $490 from other sites.

Search for BK497A, that shows various forms of the rebuild kit for our F5M42 gearbox.

Why the Mirage final drive ?

thanks

as for the mirage gear, its a different ratio than the RA, i cant remember the exact size but it spins up a bit faster if u put it in our trans(i read it somewhere in one of the threads here somewhere), u get a bit better throttle response but i think u end up getting just a bit less mpg because of the gearing change...(not that our cars get that great mileage anyway)

When my throwout bearing blew, I decided to change out the clutch since I had to drop the transmission anyways. I went to 3 different shops for quotes. Every time I mentioned ACT/Exedy for the clutch, they cringed.

All 3 shops recommended Lucas which has them at OEM spec and cheaper.

What made me give in was the fact that they have a lifetime warranty so all I pay is for labor next time the clutch wears out/needs replacing.

Edit: I looked online, couldn't find much. I'll check my receipt for a part number in a bit.

Exedy is OEM, and i've had no problems with my ACT clutch...i used a mitsu throw out bearing, and all my hydraulic clutch parts are stock, including the lines...

I had no idea, that's good to know. I need to hit up soulesswarrior for a good mechanic around town.

4 Months with Lucas clutch, still solid.

Yes, but when I compare it to the 2004 -2006 service manual, it actually does a better job if anything because of how it explains setting the differential bearing preload.
The illustrations etc are such that I do not notice a difference.

That service manual is available for download somewhere on this forum too.

the transmissions are almost the same, the procedures will be exactly the same, all the gears and synchros etc. will be in the same configuration/location, only the ratios are different for the 4G69 transmission, in fact only 5th and the final drive are different, so those gears will have different part numbers, but it's a service manual so part numbers are irrelevant...

good to know, there are 3 or 4 different models of trans in there, is there one in specific that has the most correct/helpful info?

F5M42-2-R7B5 is specific to the 4G69, but again the only difference is the 5th and final gear ratios, everything else is the same...

i might be a bit late but price cost me about 700-800 for all main bearings synchros seals clips and 2 selectors, but i did it myself so i saved alot of money, also use mitsu oil dont use ams
