Tougher choice than it should be, RA vs MR

Well, the opportunity presents itself that in about...2 months I should have the funds to purchase, cash, a new Evo IX MR. Being as that is, I would also have the funds, and well over, to drive to california and have the guys at RRM turbo me. It seems like it would be an easy answer, but I'm really torn between the two. It seems like the MR would be a much better platform to start from, being that it's AWD, but I feel the RA has sooooo much unlocked potential.

Guys give me some help here and give me some reasoning behind it. I'll accept some "Choose the Evo, dummy" but I also wanna see some "Choose the Evo BECAUSE."

Thanks for the insight guys. And I gotta say, the opportunity here is really really sweet. I'll also be looking for a house somewhere else in the US soon so if anyone knows a good place to live outside of New Orleans, lemme know.

the motor in the ra is bigger and better being a 2.4 however, the evo will definately always have more parts available then the ra.

well, with the evo IX MR, you already have the turbo, handling, etc etc. WITH the warranty ( at warranty). I never have had an RA before and im sure it has a lot of great potential, but if you look at the numbers people are getting with the evo (esp the IX), the evo has far greater potential. Plus you can have more fun in the twisties. im sure others can add. Happy choosing

wait wait ...did you just say the engine in the Ralliart is better than the engine in the Evo the 4G63,that has to be THE dumbest comment i have heard i mean really. I would say tho whatever fits your budget the best the RA is a fun car and so is the MR in the end its your choice

This was something I considered but I brought my RA to the dealership once since I've had it and they couldn't "reproduce" the issue I was having so it was moot. Glad I didn't pay for the extended. Not to mention if I get a IX...the warranty won't last long anyway, so warranty goes out the window. As far as the handling/turbo/etc/etc....this is what I was thinking. Not to mention...800+ hp from an evo would be nice to achieve.

ok
with the evo 9 you would get a warranty with turbo plus AWD for better handling ect. that is a give me BUT also with a evo comes more matainance ect being its AWD. plus in the future when parts wear out will cost more. Plus items will cost more to upgrade being it is an EVO. unless you got a lot off cash laying around then your going to be like every other guy driving a EVO looking STOCK ect till you get enough cash for that biger turbo or what ever.

RA well what can i say you have more choices for upgrades at a cheaper cost. you also wont be plauged later on with HIGH cost off matainance. your car will look unlike anyone elses with more mods ect. yes we dont have AWD but you can upgrade your suspesion for better handling. There is a company working on internal parts for the RA as we speek so that wont be a problem like a year ago. items such as cams ect. its a new platform that no one has touched yet so know one person knows the full capeablility off it this platform as off yet.

personally i would go iether way depends on wheather you are going to have the money in the futer for mods or not. I pride myself on driving a RA because i will be turboed in the futer and not looking like everyone else on the road

This is a very valid question. One, i've thought about alot myself. Should you choose the obvious performer or go with the frankestien sleeper that blows doors off other unsuspecting cars. I know that you can make the ralliart every bit as fast as the evo. The potential is there. But I think if I was put in your situation, I have a gut feeling that I'd know what I wanted to do.

I'd get the Evo, But heres why.

In my Ralliart nobody tries to race me. Maybe this is the area that I'm in, but people that actually try to race me is like once in a blue moon. I know that this varies greatly in different areas but to me, there isn't a whole lotta validity for me in the uber sleeper. The only advantage I see is that the ralliart has a lower profile appearance and dosen't attract nearly as much attention from the popo. That means you can use some of the speed and actually get away with it. Thats really up to you. Some people are obsessed with the low key sleeper. Ralliarts are much less common, so you would have something that stood out from the rest, something that nobody else has. So there are a few things going for the Ralliart but here's some solid reasons why the Evo is gonna be my pick.

Handling. Unless you mod the hell out of the ralliart, and even then, you arent' gonna out handle the legendary evo. It dosen't just have the HP, but its built for the corners as well. The Evo's handling and suspension are razor sharp. I don't think that given the current aftermarket, you're going to see a ralliart outhandle an evo. Sure you can make the ralliart as fast as the evo in drag racing but no modding is going to make the rear wheels of the Ralliart spin unless you have some magic beans or something.

Leather. Evo has it. Honestly, I feel that the lancer platform is a little lackluster on the interior but the leather makes up for it a good bit, especially with the recaros.

Street Cred. I hate that term, but ralliart owners just don't get the respect of EVO owners. Sure you might earn it after you smoke someone, but in general, i'd prefer people to see my car and instantly say "damn thats an EVO", and know that if they try to race me, I'll smoke them.

Modability.
For every piece of equipment that we ralliart owners have, Evo owners have ten times that amount. Is there potential for the ralliart, hell yeah. But apparently, you've never seen an 800hp evo. I have. Evos have nearly limitless potential WITH the aftermarket to actually back that potential up.

Warranty. Not only is your MR probably going to beat a turbo ralliart off the line, but it can do so without voiding the warranty. Sure you can mod it, but I like the fact that I can have a powerful turbo car and still be able to take it back to the dealer.

I know that there aren't many turbo ralliarts out there, but there also aren't that many MR's out there too. I know what you're going through, but i'd suggest dropping the mental issues and go with the better performer. You'll be happy you did.

EDIT: Oh, I'd like to point out that theres about a $10 thousand dollar difference between a Turbo Ralliart and an EVO MR. I'd say you get what you pay for. A turbo ralliart will eat WRX's for breakfast for less money too. In that price range, its a bargain. However I'm thinking that money isn't much of a big deal otherwise this thread would be Ralliart vs. EVO IX GSR. A turbo ralliart is a great car for the money. But if you can afford it, the IX is better. And with the new MIVEC its awsome. I've seen the Vids of the EVO IX handing the STi its *** stock to stock in the twisties and straights.

For me if I was really considereing getting an MR over my RA it would be a very easy choice. The MR without a doubt. But I'm not in that position sooooooo, I'll have to look at it from my point of view. I use my RA as my daily driver (to and from work, lugging the kids around, etc). While I would love to have a MR it just wouldn't be economical for me seeing it would be my primary ride. So as much as I'd want the MR and I know it's a much better car (performance and looks wise), I'd still have to settle with my RA.

Now on the other hand, if this is gonna be your toy car so to speak I'd say go for it in a heartbeat. As others have said, you are getting the turbo, plus AWd and a better suspension. All of which comes under the factory warranty.

Get an Evo.

Why?

1) Spending money on turboing the car will be fun, and will make your car stand out a bit more, but will cause unwanted reliability issues.
2) The Evo is already fun and reliable enough, right out of the box.
3) You have a warranty that sticks with you as long as you don't mod
4) The RA is a FWD vehicle. Putting down more power is harder than you think.
5) Handling is incredible in the Evo, and mediocre in the RA.
6) You can say "I have an Evo" over "I have a Ralliart Lancer"
7) You can say "I can do 0-60 in less time than you can say "Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution"
8) You can say "My summers are fun, and so are my winters"
9) You can say "I can feel every 1mm wide crack on the road"
10) You can say "I upgraded to an Evo, and that made all the difference"

hope this helps
