Factory airbag cutoff switches?

I was just poking around in the parts lookup program, and saw this as an option for my car:

MN134651 Airbag cutoff switch kit - Both sides 2003 - 2004

Anybody have this in their car? Looks like it mounts in the cubbyhole under the HVAC controls. While it's not worth the $518.99 to me to be able to disable my airbags at will, I'd like to know more about it.

It's most likely an on/off switch for the passenger side airbag. I think it's now a federal safety requirement so you don't decapitate your child in the front seat during an accident.

There are three different kinds listed, Passenger, Driver, and Both.

Is there anything there for drivers/passanger seats? Some of us have airbags in our seats restricting us from just taking ours out and swaping in race seats.

<Shrug> Don't know, that's why I'm posting up asking for more information about it.

I'm tempted to order the manual for it, just to read about it a bit. It's only $7.

Thanks, reTro. I try.

No link for now, mitsubishiparts.com seems to be having difficulty.

Why would it stop us? IT would just turn on the SRS light if we took off our seats and replace them wouldn't it?

Most/all cars have this "option." You need approval for it though. That is, you can't have a switch unless you can't put your child in the back seat for whatever reason. You also need a very good reason to have one for the driver's airbag.

IE, it's not something you just stroll in and get installed.

Sure you can. Buy the switch at mitsubishiparts.net and a shop will install it.

Actually it's illegal for a shop to put one in without the owner of the vehicle acquiring a certification from the NHTSA first. To get that you have to have a pretty good reason on why the airbag is dangerous for you.
