I bought my 04 ralliart 2 weeks ago today from a Mitsubishi dealer. I just have one month of warranty coverage, and so I need to find out now if my fan controller needs to be replaced.

The fans are doing things that I've never experienced with electric fans, but I don't know if it's programmed that way or if it means that the controller is going bad. What it's doing could be considered normal, but I don't have any previous experience with this car to compare it.

After I shut off the engine, the fans will kick on about one second later. They will run for a few seconds, then shut off. They also don't always run when the engine is running, but I haven't had any problems with overheating. I've hardly been anywhere in the car, and haven't been in any traffic. It's also winter, so the weather is pretty cool. If there is a problem, I haven't yet had the car in a situation where it might be obvious.

As I've said, all of this could all be normal, but if something is wrong I need to know soon so I can get the stealership to pay for it.

I would take it in guys. Its most likely the fan controller. The symptoms you stated are usually the beginning of the problem. It will then escalate to temp running a bit high during idle. This is a common problem between a lot of us.
An to be honest it is a REALLY easy part to replace. If the dealership is going to pay for it then cool if not i would consider doing it yourself.

^agreed. The part is fairly priced if you know where to go if dealership won't pay and install takes less than 5 minutes.

Thanks for the fast reply. I've got to get it worked on anyhow, needs timing/bs belts. Got a quote of $250 for that from the dealer, so it's going in soon anyhow.

looks like there is just one clip, facing the engine, that is holding the connectors together.
just push down on the clip and it should just unplug.

Edit: Sorry I gotta clarify... regarding the clip, dont actually push down on it. The top part of the clip needs to be moved toward the engine so that it 'un-clips'. Perhaps a flat head screw driver or something.

i had the SAME problem its the fan control module is fried out. I would start my car in 30 degree weather and the fan would stay on. And even after the car turned off the fan woudl continue.

I got mine through southwest Mitsubishi. VERY reasonable prices on oem parts. The service team is top notch.

I bought my 04 RA 5speed exactly 1 year and 1 month ago tomorrow w/ about 86000mi on it -now its at 110998mi- and since the day i test drove it the cooling fan kicks on and off every ten seconds on the dot and then kicks on or stays running -depending what it was doing- about ten seconds afer i shut the car off. ive taken it to the dealer 2 times so far for another issue and the writer says hey u runnin hot ot sumn that doesnt sound right...but ive had no problems and its never run hot, in fact the temp gauge stays about 1/4 inch under halfway... im not sure if thats a good thing or not but i beat the snot out of it daily and ive never had a problem...to be honest im not worried about replacing it anytime soon and im savin money to replace those dang leaking front AND rear struts i have first...

PS: I know its not related but does anybody else notice a kind of metallic clank and/or squeaking sometimes over potholes, tight turns or rough surfaces?...im assuming it has to do w/ the leaking struts and/or mounts...maybe even the sway bar links...(they're all oe after all)
