Right now it seems to be the case, at least in the US/Canada... RRM used to offer an upgraded cam, but doesn't anymore. It was kind of cost prohibitive when they did offer them though. The upside to the RRM cam, other than their greater experience with the 4G69, was that you didn't have to have your stock cam reground.

RPW has cam options, but being that they're located in Australia shipping is pretty expensive.

On a side note.... Can bad gas throw the car into limp mode? I took the RA out for a drive around the house this evening and it was running kinda rough, and not going above 3,000 RPM. and if I goose the throttle up to that 3K limit it will run really bad and not go above like 2K.

I pulled the fuel pump and pumped all the old (over a year) stuff out of it and plan on putting some fresh go juice in tomorrow after work.

I hope that this is the cause of my issue and not something to do with the cam...

you may have water in the gas, if you can get it out, that's good...if not then you can try some water remover/antifreeze...If she's in limp mode it will throw a code, any lights?

Houston, we still have a problem...

Put new gas in it and it is still hitting limp mode when going any higher than 3500-4000 RPM. It seems to drive fine when under light accelleration. It seems go into limp right after revving it. Even in gear it won't go above 4K, and after hitting the 3500-4K limiter the RPM's drop to idle and won't go above 2K and runs really rough and won't go above 10-15 MPH.

We double, triple, and quadruple checked the timing to make sure it was spot on. The only things I can think of at this point are to reset the computer and see if it clears it out, and change the oil because if it's too low it might be keeping it out of MIVEC and possibly throwing it into limp mode as well.

I really hope it's not the cam that's doing it... That would really suck. I don't have another cam to put in it.

Anyway, any suggestions would be great, and I'll update tomorrow after trying the solutions I can think of and any you guys have for me.

I need an OBDII scanner, my SES light is out in my cluster, but I'm pretty sure it should have logged something from the way it's been running.

so you don't know if your engine light comes on? that's not good...scanners are not too expensive.

Yeah, I used to have one, but sold it because I never really used it. Go figure... now I need one and I don't have the money to get one right now.

I might be able to get a hold of one from a buddy's cousin... it's one that can datalog from the computer and not just give a code. Should be able to get some good info out of that.

So I got a OBDII scanner... I'm gonna plug it in the RA tomorrow. But after doing some other checks today I still haven't found anything mechanical that is wrong with it so it has to be a sensor... It's running super super rich. Like black smoking rich. The plugs are covered in black soot and the exhaust shoots out black smoke similar to a diesel truck...

We pulled the plugs to make sure they all were firing and also pulled the injectors to make sure they didn't look clogged. But something is telling the ECU to blast out a crap ton of fuel and it's throwing a code that puts it into limp mode if the RPM's hit the 4K limiter.

Here's a video I took showing some of the smoke and at about 28 seconds it goes into limp mode.

It might just be the camera but that smoke looks white to me.....

The head gasket was new right? You torqued down the head correctly?

How much gas was in it to start with and octane? How much did you put in and octane?

There was a little white smoke/steam as well... the black smoke is only really noticeable when starting it.

The head gasket is brand spanking new and the head was torqued down to the specs in the service manual.

The old gas was about 7 gallons of 93 octane. We pumped out at least 90% of it and put in 5 gallons of fresh 93.

Here's what I got from the reader:

P0101 MAF range Circuit Range/Performance
P2173 Throttle actuator High airflow detected

Also, I took a few pics of the sensor data I was getting while the motor was running:

haven't done the valve lash hot yet, Haven't ran the motor long enough to heat it up.
