2009 Ralliart @ tuning tech - Pics
AM radio=Manual Trans=less money=old technology
XM radio=SST=More money=new technology
Do they both serve the purpose? YES.
One is old school and one is new. You need to decide. I see no reason to pay for radio when you can get free radio but I am sure a lot of you younger guys do. The same is true for these transmissions. You guys think the manual is cheaper...it is. The SST is more expensive but you get more out of it just like XM. The SST may not be as VISCERAL as you call it. But if you are going to road race, then the SST is the way to go. Proven faster shifts that will get you around quicker. If you are going to a strip, then you probably want a stick. But I still say if you are going to drag race just get a drag car. It will be much easier to deal with when it breaks.
Amby, I was not comparing Lambo with Mitsu. I said that a DC trans can take a lot of power in the Lambo. Yes, I am sure it is more expensive, but it needs to hold way more power.
My point was, do not write off this trans as weak, because it may be able to take it fine.
I do remember a review several months ago that discussed the stop and go in heavy traffic. It was stated that you should keep moving or put the car into neutral. I am not going to assume anything from that as the final TCU programming may not have been finished as it was many months ago on a test mule pre production car.

If you are going to road race, you don't want the SST. It doesn't give you the same amount of control as a manual, it's more expensive and it can't be upgraded.
I don't think the trans is weak, 300 whp is still a lot of power, but I simply do not think it is better than a standard transmission and if you want to mod it might not be the best for you.
Speaking of the original NA Ralliart. For every modded one I see 20 stock ones which is my point. Hell my wife had one and it was a great little car but we never had intentions of modding it nor would we an 09 Ralliart. You will always have some younder people try to turn their Ralliart into an EVO but that will be a very small minority.
I think alot of you are missing the boat with the Ralliart. While probably 75% of EVO's get modded the Ralliart will be much lower as more will be purchased by people looking to use it as a daily driver and nothing more. Bolt-on mods aren't making power on new cars anymore and people aren't modding near as much as the 90's anyway which is why companies like Greddy/Tust are going bankrupt.
The points ambystom01 is making is only relevant to about 20% or less of Ralliart buyers that will want to seriously mod the car and really if that's the case you would be far better server ponying up for an EVO X GSR which comes which is a superior performance car. Why would you spend thousands of dollars modding a Ralliart when you still won't be able to approach the capabilities of a stock GSR? IMO that's just dumb and too many here are missing the whole point of the Ralliart which is meant as an everyday car that has just enough EVO DNA to separate it from the mundane Civic's and Corollas.

-Gas bills go up alot more, if u have the car u drive like a dick 80% the time.
-Tires, RA has much better choices in rims/tires. With the Evo your stuck from the start and most are going 19". So now you go from $800 for 4 tires to $1200+ and they don't last nearly as long.
-Frequent Oil changes
-Insane Insurance costs
-Worrying about theft and getting it stripped.
The list goes on and on. I could easily have a GSR but I don't want it. It all comes down to each persons living situation. Myself, I work 60-75 hrs a week and I commute through the DC/Metro area. On average I prob sit in traffic for many hours a week. Not parking lot traffic, ****ty 2-3mph crawl traffic. Clutch in clutch out clutch in clutch out. I'd rather not have the evo there. I also don't have any time to get to the tracks anymore. So I turn my local roads into the tracks and make the best use of them with what I have. S-Sport and AYC won't help my morning commute.
I could go on and on but I think I summed it up. Myself, I know I'll be doing full suspension work, engine work, body, wheels/tires, brakes etc... And will it add up to evo cost, oh I'm sure it will. But I'll have more fun along the way building it how I want.
Werd.

I'm with him. This forum is not for the 80%. This is for the 20% thats here.
Has anyone heard form Nick@TTech with more info or pic's with this tune that Robi was doing?

This logic can be applied to any and all cars. Do you think the majority of civics are modified? No, I would wager that 90% of them go untouched but because of the shear number of civics there are plenty of nice and rice ones around. This is why tuning started. Hell, cars like the Evo, STI, Ralliart, Skyline, Supra wouldn't be what they are if it wasn't for the "minority" as you call it who modify their cars. I suspect that a lot of the people on this forum will mod their cars. They wouldn't be on this forum if they weren't interested in cars or the tuning scene.
I strongly disagree with that comparison. A manual transmission is not like AM Radio while the SST is like XM, you are vastly underestimating a standard while at the same time vastly overestimating the new technology. Is the new technology promising? Sure but its not perfect. I think a more fair comparison is Mac to PC, it really does boil down to personal preference. Yes there are some things that Macs do better and there are some things that PCs do better but they're not enough to warrant declaring either one a winner.

Except it's not old technology since it's been changing and evolving the entire time. Do you really think a modern manual transmission is anything like what they had a century ago?
Actually, the top laps are set by traditional manuals (at least if you are only counting street cars). The top cars are the Viper ACR (traditional manual) and the ZR1 (again, traditional manual). That backfired now didn't it?

Doesn't matter, he decided to raise the issue and it backfired on him. I agree that the transmission is but a small part but I'm sure if the top times belonged to an SST-equipped car, he would be declaring it a "win" for the transmission. It is somewhat interesting that despite using an apparently old and decrepit system, cars like the ACR and the ZR1 are capable of blistering times without pro-drivers. Looks like all that shifting wasn't a distraction or a source of embarrassment.
