I agree you do not really need a second tachomter, but by this logic you should not even need a speedometer or odometer, as "real racers" should know how fast they are going and how far they have gone.

A speedometer and an odometer are very different from a tachometer. I have yet to see a single car that has two speedometers. The only case where I can see an aftermarket tach being useful is if your car doesn't have one (or the stock one is damaged/non-functional). Just because you got it for free, doesn't mean you have to use it. Generally speaking, STDs are free but you sure as hell don't want one.

Race cars need speedometers and maybe odometers for a variety of reasons, obvious ones being for times when strict speed limits are in place (such as in the pits or in transition stages) and testing/tuning (a quick glance down can tell you if you gained speed in a corner). Sure it's possible to know how fast you're going based on RPM and what gear you're in but having a speedometer is a hell of a lot easier. Two tachs is just silly though.
Here are some threads you may find useful.
Installing a shift light. It's for an Evo X but it should help you as well.

If you do install it, for the love of God, don't let the Honda guys see it.

Race teams have done the math for the gearing they have put in... they know how fast you will go at said RPM in what gear, making spedo almost not needed but thats only certain types of racing and it really does depend on what you are doing.
as far as odom goes some teams just use hours of use or they know the miles they will go per lap or race, once again math is used. miles or KM, due to the fact that miles and KM are not a constant to how the car is being driven, Hrs kinda gives you a general base to how much your kicking the cars A$$ before you need to do basic maintenance, witch they do alot more then normal anyways.

Yes I figured most serious race teams would simply compute mileage thus why I said "maybe odometer". I haven't seen a race interior in enough detail to know if they actually have a real odometer. Some might, like rally cars. Most seem to have speedometers though which makes me think it's still useful for most drivers.

Point being if the guy wants two tachs, who cares? But this is the internet, so I realize everyone cares about everything where an argument can be had.
And thanks for giving him some links anyway. =)

I don't care what he does to his car, it's his money but I'll gladly tell him if it's a good idea or not. If we all took the attitude that we shouldn't go that extra bit further, this forum wouldn't be anywhere near as good as it is. A lot of people come on here with misconceptions about tuning, BOVs are a great example of this. Imagine how many people would happily **** their money away if we simply told them where to buy an HKS SSQV.
