Lancer flogs 140 Kw Corolla
As some of you know I recently cut a quarter mile time of 15.9 secs in my stock 02 Lancer coupe.
Now reading in the 2nd latest Motor magazine I see the 140Kw Corolla Sportivo only cuts the quarter in about 16.1 secs..........so what does all this say............the Corolla is a heavy beast ( which it is) and that you should never underestimate the 86Kw produced by the Mitubishi machine!!
To be honest I expected more from the Toyo camp with that big power boast. I am keen to run one at the strip some time, although I suppose they will be a bit rare since they're a pricey item.

Evo
My engine is rock stock. A supercharger installation is very near with the bracket produced this week, a bit more work and it will be on and going. Then some serious tuning and we'll see what she gives then. Bring on the 200Kw Corollas!!!
Evo don't let them Corolla's phase you man!
OK now the real story, there are a few "small things" that I have changed: Iridium spark plugs, only premium fuel, 56mm tail pipe muffler setup, all synthetic lubricants ie engine, trans etc.

Hardly a flogging
I'd hardly call 0.2 seconds down the quarter a flogging by anyones standards. There is no chance in hell that a stock lancer coupe would do a 15.9. The 4 door CE Lancer does a mid - low 17 and the 2 door does a low 17 - high 16 at best. Any 1.8 SOHC N/A lancer would need to be reasonably modified to beat a stock ZE122 Sportivo Corolla which does a 16.1.
A comparison of the current models, a VR-X coupe at $24990 vs the Sportivo at $29990, would show the Corolla out in front by almost a second over the quarter mile. The corolla behaves like a performance vehicle, with the engine revvving freely and smoothly all the way to the 8200rpm redline, unlike the lancer which is harsh at anything much over 5500rpm and almost unbearable at it's 6500rpm redline. The let down with the corolla is it's tubbyness, over 1200 kilos, but it still manages handle at a much higher standard than the lancer.
I have driven the sportivo twice now and i have owned a 1.8l lancer for 5 years since new, which is regularly serviced and only run on 98RON fuel. Out of the two, i know i'd chose the corolla if i was after performance. The Lancer is a good car and it gets me from a to be with good fuel economy, but it's not a performance car of any kind. Good daily drivers, not traffic light dragsters.

Single cam
This may come as a suprise but my Lancer is not modified as you might think. The mods are listed above.
I have the time slips in hand which is proof of the capability of a near stock Lancer (tailpipe change only) over the quarter mile at Palmyra dragway at Mackay Qld. You are welcome to bring the Corolla with the 140Kw high revving engine to challenge the Lancer with the 86Kw chugger. You may find that .2 ahead is a long way ahead if you can't beat it!! If you are there I WILL be there! Even if the Lancer lost by .2 it still indicates that the supposed 140 Kw is fairly lame remember that 140Kw is more than 50% greater than 86Kw. That should be a lot extra!
Lancer - Spirited cars for spirited people
Corolla - Don't want that losing "feeling"

Also a one off run should really be hailed as spot on unless u can turn around and back it up again... I only magaged 16.65 once.. the closest I came again was 16.78! @ 140km/h that .13s is a good 2-3m!
Get that Corolla down the strip and I can almost garantee it will EAT nearly any mildly modded Lancer! (as loathed as I am to say it, even though I love Toyotas nearly as much as Mitsu's)
Anyways thats my 2c worth! CYall!

Now somehow I will get this image up, just bear with me as it may take a few attempts!
This is my best and I can or could have posted up the rest of them which are 16.0's and 16.1's.
Will put it up as an attachment! Try that.

All i can say is that you must have a flukey vehicle and/or be a very good dragstrip driver. According to all quoted times i have seen in magazines, on the internet, from mitsu themselves, along with runs i've seen at the drags, mates times, it all points to the fact that a STOCK CE Lancer will not do a sub 16s pass. If u can run ur car to a 15.9, then you would certainly better it in a Sportivo. As i said, i own a CE lancer and have driven a sportivo twice and the Toyota is ALOT faster.
I cannot bring a Sportivo up from Sydney to Mackay to race you as i don't own one, i own a 88 model corolla and a 98 model Lancer. In my Lancer i've raced many other Lancers and been even with most of them. It's never come close to being "spirited" though as they simply aren't a quick car. As for Corollas having a losing feeling, you obvisouly know very little about the Toyota 1.6 4A family of engines. My Corolla tears apart my Lancer and i've beaten every non turbo Lancer yet, same goes for my mates with rollas. It's not a dig at the Lancer, i love them, but the 1.8L SOHC is built for economy, not performance.

I have driven almost every model (GSR, Evo, Gli, Glxi, VRX etc) Lancer from the CC series up along with many a Corolla. Now something which I hardly ever bring up is the fact that different Lancers perform differently. Everytime I think how can this be, maybe it is just me but after a while you can see the differences. Now I dont know how one model Lancer will perform better than another but it happens. In general 98% of Lancers drive identical but every so often there is one that jumps out from the bunch. I dont know if the people at the factory were paying more attention that day or what, but it happens. I know my car is not exactly classified as standard (not the 86kw that other 1.8L have) but I have never been beaten by any other Lancers (excluding Evo/GSR, which I have not raced against) and no Corolla has ever come close to anything but embarasment. Now over an approximate 500m I will gain about 2-3 car lengths over most stock Lancers.
If anyone else has had the same experience with different Lancers doing different things, please let all of us know, so we can find out further. I am not talking about 1.5L Lancers Vs the 1.8L just comparing same body/equipment/engine.
Flog ain't that the truth
Mivec you speak the gospel there! There are differences and they can be significant and I have no idea why. During mass production there will be variations, how the end result can be so different for the identical machine beats me. I test drove a blue one which went really hard for the first part of the test drive then died to a more normal level, needless to say I did not purchase that car. I never did test drive the one I bought but hoped it would continue to go well without the sudden dying.
On the issue of differences between identical vehicles.....at work we have lots of Ford Courier Turbo Diesel 4x4s. They are mostly the same age (none more than 90 000 kms) and body style but the performance differences between them are staggering. Some will wind the speedo to 160km/h without apparent effort, yet the next one will struggle at 145Km/h and stay there. If you get a good one of these you have got a real goer.
I've seen the same with Ford Falcon 4.1s in the old XCs when they were the raging thing, most were normal and average, but then there was the odd one which performed beyond believability. Funny thing was the idle was still the same (ie no significant change in cam) etc etc, but would go like there was no tomorrow.

Thinking I would post this up for a look. This is the current state of play with boosting the Lancer. Got the bracket all manufactured and fitted up yesterday, 2 weeks from now car will tuned, complianced, insured and ready for Corolla's!

Power target is 50% above standard or just a fraction under 130Kw. Will try up to 7psi. In reality it is likely to be a bit over that when finished. Really wanting to get an intercooler in there but a new front bar is about the only way to get it all in?!
It is likely to become a kit and a Brisbane company has their hand up for it. But hey there is a bit of ground to cover in making a decent kit. The car will be at the Jamboree for 1 day at the least, so catch up with us there.

I can put up my hand and say that I have just beat a Corolla Sportivo 5 times (the guy just would't have it!!) by at least 3-4 car lenghs each time. They are very sluggy off the mark. Lancers keep kickin some Corolla Sportivo butt
