Question Need help for Downshifting (Highway)

I brought out my new ralliart out tonight and drove on the streets and on the highway. I had no problem driving it on the streets. I drove on the highway fine but had a problem downshifting when exiting the highway. When I downshifted the revs jumped from 3k to 4k. Can someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong and tell me how to avoid this the next time please.

A lot of advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hope 2 here from everyone soon.

Thanks.

Wink

y r u downshifting exiting the highway anyway? sounds like you're going faster than the gear you're trying to shift down into. sounds like you need to spen more "quality time" with your car.

it's normal for your revs to jump when you downshift.. even in an automatic it would do that

how long have you driven a manual? is this your first manual tranny?

i been at it for over 14 years..

try upshifting, then maybe the revs will drop from 4K to 3K

umm i think you're joking....but if you're not...

rpms are supposed to rise when you downshift, and fall when you upshift. this is why if you should "blip" the throttle when you downshift, to match the rpms. to "blip" and to smoothly downshift from say 5th to 4th, clutch in, blip the rpms to the level that you think they'll be at when you downshift, shift into 4th, then release clutch. this should all be done quickly. when you are comfortable enough perfectly matching the rpms via blipping the throttle, it should be a lot smoother and put a lot less wear on the tranny and clutch.

but again..

i hope you're kidding!

? Yeah like people have said, your revs should jump when you downshift. Just try tapping the throttle when your letting the clutch out, that should help with the jerky feeling, if thats what your refering to. Seriously though, are you joking?

He's a complete noob, and that post doesn't have any tell-tale signs that he's kidding other than how ridiculous the concept of wondering why RPM's rise as one downshifts. I think this post was serious, and I hope I never have a person that oblivious driving near me on the road.

I think everyone is forgetting that they had to learn how to drive at sometime. Nobody used a standerd transmission for the first time and knew exactly how it worked.
Just because you have learned something doesnt mean everyone else knows. Keep your posts informative and friendly.

jpm117:
let me apoligize for all the as$es on the site...there are many of them.
You may want to look at where your gears start and finish while your up shifting.
The 03 Lancer OZ
1st gear goes to around 40km/h
2nd goes to 100km/h
3rd goes to 140km/h
4th goes to 180 km/k
5th goes to over 200km/h (ummm so I heard....ya)

You dont want to be downshifting at those points you want to leave yourself about a 20km/h margin there (at least)

Avoid downshifting into 1st gear as there are no syncros (what lets the grear glide into its place)
Downshift to second at speeds under 80km/h
Downshift to 3rd at speeds under 120km/h
Downshift to 4th at speeds under 140km/h

Don't just let your clutch out fast, you want to ease it out but not riding it (accelerating with the clutch somewhat depressed)

Once you get comfortable you can start rev matching which is giving your car a little shot of gas to bring the RMP to where it will be in the gear your are about to shift to.

Hope this helps and I hope that the rude people did not steer you away from our forums.
If you have any other questions feel free to PM me.

its really simple physics, first of all, NEVER downshift more than 1 gear, its doable, but only for ppl who know how to do it, for example, dont go from 5th to 2nd when ur going at 120km/hour, it'll kill ur transmission. the most i ever did was go to 2nd from 4th or 5th at 80km/h, u hear the nice sporty decompression sound that u dont get on automatic cars....

anyways the physics part is that when ur on 5th, the largest gear, its spinning at a certain speed, when u immediately shift down to the 4th, which is natually smaller, it'll try to conserve that same level of energy, but tranferred to a smaller gear, hence the higher rpm (revolution per minute).

its completely normal that ur rpm will jump up when u downshift.

and never, i mean NEVER, go down to 1st from any other gears if ur going more than ~10km our, its dangerous, u'll majorly grind it and eventually snap it, and besides even if u try to, it wont let u, but if u force it hard it will go...but dont to that unless ur about under 10km/hour. but u dont have to use 1st gear when u slow down anyways, after 2nd, ur slow enough to hit the brakes. use 1st only when ur accelerating.

and while breaking in ur car, i wouldn't redline it until ~2-3000km on ur odometer, this will ensure that all ur parts in the engine will fuse and seal properly.

the recommended rpm area to shift gears upwards and downwards is about 2000-3000rpm.

if anyone thinks i'm wrong, feel free to correct me.
