Oil Change Question

I'm looking to save a couple bucks so I'm gonna be doing my own oil changes.

I did a search on here to see if there's anything tricky with doing an oil change...doesn't look like it but I have a couple of questions.

Where can I find the correct crush washer (oil drain plug washer) for the ralliart in Ontario (Cambridge)? And are they the same for most cars or do they differ as much as oil filters?

Best I can say is go to Part Source on 24. At very least they should know the answers for that.

You can buy the crush washer from the dealer, along with the filter.. it's actually quite cheap here.

9/10 times I just reuse the same old washer and have had no problems with leaks etc. As long as the crush washer is the same size, the no difference, but I have no idea what the size is and what other cars use the same one.

I don't think there is a crush washer on the 04s. I have changed the oil so many times now. I was looking for it the first time, there was none on it. No big deal, since there was no leak without it. So I didn't bother to put one on if it was missing.

You need to buy an oil filter remove wrench, the one that fit on to the bottom of the oil filter and use a 6" or more length 3/8"drive extension and a 3/8"ratchet to turn it. The oil filter is a bit high up there, there is no room for a strap type wrench to reach up there to turn it unless you remove the bottom splash covers.

You need to jack the car up and put jack stand to secure it before you go underneath the car. Safety first.

Tools:
Metric Socket 12mm (maybe its 14mm I forget)
Socket wrench for that socket
Either a set of channel locks or a oil filer wrench (I just use channel locks)
A Rag
Oil Drain Pan ($10.00 at Canadian tire)
Funnell
Common Sence

1. Buy 5 Liters of Oil (check owners manual for grade of oil but for the 4G94 lancer its 5W30 for winter and 10W30 for summer)
2. Buy the correct Oilfilter for your car. Dont Use Motormaster or Fram (same thing) use the quaker state, the K&N or the OEM filter.
3. GO to the dealer and buy a drain plug crush seal.

Okay Lets get started...

4. Put the drain pan under the location of the drain plug on the oil pan. (see pic for details)
5. Put the correct size Socket or Wrench (DO NOT USE PLIERS OR VIVE GRIPS) on the Drain plug and losen it off (Lefty Loosey Righty Tighty )
6. Finish unscrewing the plug with your fingers so that you dont loose it in the drain pan and then have to dig it out.
7. Wipe off the drain plug with the rag and remove the old crush seal
8. Once the oil stops draining out move the pan under where the oil filter sits and remove that with the channel locks or the oil filter wrench
9. Put the old oil filter in the drain pan where the filter spot is so that the oil can drain out of it.
10. Wait
11. When the car has finished driaining open up one of the bottles of oil and stick your finger in it.
12. Take your oiley finger and use it to oil up the rubber ring on the oil filter
13. Screw up the filter to its location on the car by hand. you will know it is on straight because you will be able to spin it on by hand easealy. Then finish tightening with your hands untill its tight. (DO NOT USE A WRENCH TO TIGHTEN, hand tight is good enough. just make sure you use some muscle)
14. Remove the old crush seal on the drain plug (if you havent yet) and put the new one on.
15. Screw the drain plug on by hand in the location that it came out of. Again. You will know it is on straight because you will get it on the majority of the way by hand.
16. When its too tight to tighten with your fingers get the wrench and snug it up (dont reef on it) Spark plug tight is fine.
17. Open the big cap on the valve cover under the hood that reads OIL (May say 710)
18. Pour in 3 liters of the oil.
19. wait about 1 min and check the level on the dip stick (between the 2 marks is 1 liter)
20. Put in the fourth liter
21. Repeat step 19
22. Put in the applicable amount.

Start the car for a few seconds
let it sit for a few minutes and check the level again

Look under the car to double check that you didnt just pour 4 liters of oil on the floor because you forgot to reinstall either the filter or the drain plug. (there should be no drips, streems or leakes)

Check your Tire Pressure (32 psi is perfect on the stock Lancer tires)

Every second Oil change rotate your tires

Keep your recipts and mark in your owners manual that you changed the oil and what date and kilometers.

Check your air filter too...(cause the hood is open you might aswell)

Every 3 oil changes check your spark plugs

Step 23. Carefully pour the dirty oil into the empty bottoles of oil.
Put the old filter in a plastic bag (I double bag it)

Step 24. Take the dirty oil and the old oil filter to your local oil recycling center.

Note* this should take you about 20-30 min, you do not need to jack up the car for this job, you can reach the plug and the filter from under neath although properly lifting the car with a jack and putting it on 4 jack stands makes it easier. (you need to raise the fron and back evenly to ensure you drain as much oil as you can)

I take no responsibility in any mistakes. This is a basic guide line and some things may very from vehicle to vehicle. Change your own oil at your own risk.

Also, the lancer takes 4 liters (maybe just over) not 5, I suggest buying the extra incase you spill or need to top up oil between oil changes.

I know how to change the oil...i do it all the time on machines at work...just not on my car...
Went out tonight to pick stuff up

Couple more questions arose:
1- does anywhere in K/W sell royal purple, couldn't find it... I just picked up some 10w30 full synthetic mobil 1 (4.4 litres for $35 at wal mart plus an extra litre obviously)
2- where can i get a k&n, mobil 1, bosch...basically any oil filter other than fram...went to part source and they had jack, same at crappy tire and wal mart...all fram

Canadian Tire for the Filter and Performance Improvements (Guelph) for the Royal Purple. Although as time has gone on I found other oils that work much better on the Lancer then RP and for less cost too.

Canadian Tire only carries fram and motomaster here...i thought the mobil 1 was a pretty good deal...royal purple's gonna be around $10/litre anyway
