Looking to import an Evo IX

Hi there, I'm new to this site. I'm looking to import a 2006 Evo IX from the USA.

I was just wondering if there is any one in ontario with a 06 Evo IX that could tell me how there importation experiance went and all the details of it.

Also what is the insurace going to be like? I'm 18 (19 in july) will have my G very soon and i currently drive a 2006 chevy cobalt SS supercharged. No tickets or acidents.

Thanks,
Mike

welcome Mike!

i believe there is someone with a white evo 9 MR in Toronto... I've seen it in person. Pure hotness, imo looked even better than the evo X's due to its rarity! i also believe he imported it himself, i'll look up his username for you when i can be bothered later

I have looked heavily into importing from the US (i was 1 step away from flying to Chicago to purchase a RX-7), so if you have any questions I can probably help, and if not, i can forward you to the appropriate web sources - I got a bunch of useful links saved up somewhere.

Regarding your insurance, you should check the details with your company. I also considered importing a red evo 9MR, and when I asked my insurance (belair) they told me I had to have the car appraised in order for them to provide me with coverage. It is possible your company will require some additional procedures to cover you as well.
Will the car be under your name? I know in many parts of the world cars like the evo, STI, Skylines have some of the highest insurance price tags. I was paying just over $4000 for my RSX type S / year and I am 22 (21 then) so I think for your age and the car it will be atleast $4500 if under yr name + full coverage.

Despite the costs of importing etc I still think it would be worthwhile to import one over. Honestly the car is and looks so absolutely RAW! Plus they are so rare here, if you can afford it I most definitely recommend

Thank you for your reply, im on the line wether to sell my car and import and evo, i know at some point i deffinatly will because im in love with the evo ix

but the thing that scares me is all the work i need to do to get one over here. the insurance wont be in my name, it will be in my parents, the quoted me $775 a month in my name to insure my cobalt ss/sc which is rediclious.

also one other big question. if i buy an evo ix that has warrenty in the usa, what happens in canada?

you wont get warranty in canada, especially for the past evos. are you looking to import the car yourself, or use a brokerage company?

No Warrenty in Canada for the older EVO. The import process involved is not really that hard just alot of things you need to know ahead of time. And make sure you have your documents ready for usa and canada customs. Insurance wise i pay around $2400/year.

I think with the older Evo its best for you to get someone in the usa to inspect the car mechanically. I would recommend you look for a very low mileage one since there will be less abuse on them.

I say go for it if you really want one! The bumper law was removed and evo's can be imported as of last year. Just watch out for lemons. Most people buy evo's to race with in the states. In Canada, owning an Evo especially over here on the west coast is more of a social status thing. Out of all the evo owners here, only a couple actually take theirs to the track. Most don't even let their car see rain and forget about snow!

Evo 9's are admissible in Canada now with no real issues. I just picked one up a a short while ago. You will need to install/wire daytime running lights, though.

Insureance costs will vary greatly, but for myself, I only had a $120/year increase going from a 2006 Mitsubishi Sportback Ralliart to to a 2006 Evo 9 SE.

i imported an 06 evo and im from toronto send me a PM if u want. i know mostly about the process, documentation, and taxes, but at the end of the day i ended up hiring an Import company to bring my car over to Canada for $1000 US....instead of me taking a plane to L.A., and driving 4 days straight back to toronto....i figured i would save less than $400 when i factored in the airplane ticket, gas from L.A. california to toronto, and the amount of time i would have to take off from work
