A high revving diesel motor would be a slick powerplant with some electric support. Good for Mitsubishi for getting ahead of the times. Maybe the day of getting more than 4MPG on track is in my future?!?!
As far as street capability, it's a fantastic idea, far better than e85. I drive a diesel on the street and love it... It ain't yo gramma's 240DL

Sorry, but diesel and high revving are an oxymoron. Have you ever seen the diesels that Audi and Peugeot have used in LeMans type racing? You won't see anything close to 9k with a diesel. Diesels inherent advantage is torque and lots of it. Expect on shifting from 4-5k at best with a diesel, even a small one.

Just to play devil's advocate, but saying "4-5k shifts" means nothing. Gearing will determine length between shifts, so in itself, shifting RPM is arbitrary.

The guy I quoted said that it would be "high revving". I was merely responding to that. Who said anything about the gearing? Of course gearing can affect performance, especially the spread between the lower gears. And it is true that with the right gearing, the engine will stay in its peak torque range when shifting. Let's just pray that Mitsubishi does not throw a CVT transmission into the mix. Having a 1.6 liter turbo diesel with an electric motor/motors will certainly change how we view performance.

Agreed. I'm curious to see what pans out. That said, I have no vested interest in anything other than performance and to some extent aesthetics...which you would think would be the case with most people, but it appears on this site that people would rather stick with the old than try something new.

It doesnt matter, Evos are just going down hill. The original ones were way better than the new ones. New ones are so cheaply made!

But the real question is do they start off with production electric motors and then modify *those* to run the 8 second quarter?

Doubtful. So they started with sweet high power motors that we will never see on our production car. That to me sounds like analogy fail.

As of today, swapping to a bigger/more efficient battery is the only way I'm afraid

More cells to store more energy, more power (kW) generated which turns into hp when converted to car jargon, which turns into more speed!
