Shifting Technique

I drive an evo 9 SE stock and for some reason I feel I still have a lot to learn about this car. Some days I feel that the car just doesn't accelarate as quickly as it does on other days especially when I do want to push it hard. On some occasions when I do want to push the car hard I find the most lag shifting from 1st to 2nd. I'm thinking maybe my shifting is just not quick enough and I tend to drop the rpms too low in between shifts or maybe its how I control the clutch and throttle...I really don't have a clue what i'm doing wrong...I know it's getting to know the car, but I feel like the car is getting the best of me, I've been driving manual for a year and mind you I learned on this car and I feel that I still haven't found that comfort level where I can shift quickly but at the same time smoothly into gears. I will eventually want to learn how to drag race but I feel I'm not yet ready ...does anybody have any advice on quick shifting techniques without damaging the car in the process?

Thanks!

Practice makes perfect? I think this is something that would be best to work on in person. Maybe a friend or local Evo owner can help, or maybe a driving program?

IMO, the stock shifter is crap, but then again I own an viii. To really improve the shifting, upgrade the under hood bushings, short shifter, motor mount, and clutch line for better feel. These will make the shifts much more percise. Not much to comment on technique other than keep practicing.

Changing out my trans fluid to amsoil really made a big difference in how the car drove for me, along with all the other stuff mentioned above.

I have noticed that with the stock pill in the clutch line, its harder to shift fast. When mine was in the only thing i could do was to shift at 6500 rpms in first only and for SOME reason... i could shift as fast as i wanted like a honda, (chirp tires)

Im not sure speed is your problem but it helped me....

I largely shift below 3k, usually 2500 or so (largely because there isn't much point where I drive most). Spinning it up to 4k - 5k and all the way past 7k doesn't seem much different to me though, as far as shift speed.

When you figure it out, let me know. I have underhood bushings, a motor mount, and a heavier shift knob...I think my shifting is getting slower. 1-2 shift owns me. Half the time I don't get it in the gear when power shifting and its slow as hell when I occasionally do.

Have you tried a new clutch line also?

How often do any of you service your drivetrain?? keep up with the fluid changes.

i myself have a shep trans/front motor mount/clutch line(upper and lower)/shifter bushings/act 6 puck and light flywheel and it shifts amazing.
