Mickey Thompson 17" Bias-Ply Drag Slick for Evolutions, etc.
I went to the MT booth at SEMA and spoke to the test engineer who was doing the testing. These have been put on the perma- back burner.
They evidently made an ISO bead for automobiles and used the same mold as the motorcycle slick....didn't work out and evidently wouldn't stay on the bead. He said it didn't work out, and the motorcycle slick was unsafe at best. I asked him several times if they were going to revisit it and he said probably not. It would require a new mold, and the market isn't large enough to warrant making a new tire.
So **** this one down the drain.

The original plan was that although the market is relatively niche, if the existing motorcycle mold would only need updated bead-rings and minor construction changes to produce an acceptable product the program would be justifiable.
Unfortunately after producing test specs with the J (ISO) style bead rings and a few necessary construction changes the technical department at Mickey Thompson was very unpleased with the results. For Mickey Thompson to create an all new mold for such a relatively niche product would take a tremendous amount of justification. Molds are very expensive to produce.
Mickey Thompson's technical department has explored all possibilities with existing molds and unfortunately, a new mold is the only way a product worth releasing could be produced.
Mickey Thompson will not build a product unless the program is completely justified and will not release a product unless the technical department is completely satisfied.
The vehicles for which this product was originally intended will only continue to gain in popularity for drag racers as the vehicles become more affordable. For that reason Mickey Thompson will continue to seek justification to support further research. In the meantime, Mickey Thompson urges everyone not to run the Part # 3221, 26.0/7.0-17 ET Drag Motorcycle Tire (for safety reasons).
Thank you all for your interest.

Don't sweat it guys, the last contact I had with another tire company says sometime after January we will have a slick in 17" for the EVO's/Subaru's. I am 100% confident before spring we will have them!
can you share who this tire company will be? or will we have to wait and see? either way, this is still a move in the right direction!
You can also fit 26x9.5x16 QTP's on lighter 16x7 or 16x8 wheels over the stock Brembo brakes. Been very happy with my 16" setup and the 1.4 60 foot times.
Just to give you an idea on weight the cheap Rota's weigh 13.5 lbs and the QTP's weigh 16 lbs.
The 16" tire also helps absorb drivetrain shock better than 17" since there's more sidewall.
