Launching
Launching
I know there are threads out there with various tips, but throw me some more ideas. I've done the searching but I still feel like I could improve greatly. I haven't actually been to the track but just practicing in the parking lot at work after hours (plenty of room, no other cars)
Half the time the you can smell the clutch afterwards so I feel like I'm not letting off the clutch pedal quick enough, but I don't want to break anything by letting go too quick.
Any pointers?

if you smell clutch afterwards, your slipping it to long
you have to find the point right between slipping it to long and not slipping it enough. it takes practice and a good clutch and flywheel set-up. i hope your not doing this on the stock clutch, they cant take many long slips before crapping out on you

It is stock clutch but I plan on replacing it anyhow. I'd rather get the basic idea on the one on it's way out so I don't start from zero with the one I'd like to keep around a while.
yeah...I want to know too...I come from RWD cars...and I just found out how hard launching really is as compared to RWD cars...or downshifting for that matter...hopefully the transfer case is strong because I did chirp tires when I downshifted to 2nd going about 30mph...that can't be good...so lets here it guys...give us some pointers...and yes I do have a stock clutch as well...
I'd suggest you go ahead and replace it. You're gonna have to relearn it if you go with a heavier clutch anyway. My exedy twin disk engages WAY earlier than the stock clutch. But just find the spot where you slip it too long, then drop it way earlier than that.. then find a nice spot inbetween

replace your clutch then go to learn

to launch rev to 5500, and learn to slip the clutch out enough where it doesnt load the drivetrain all a sudden. thats how you break things
im not good at explaining it, i can just do it....
my 1.6 60' times on the street prove that (g-tech pro)

so get the 2 step to engage, floor it
then its all about feeling it out
if you slip it too long you will burn the clutch
if you side step/drop it you will bog and could break something
only thing to do is practice and learn your car and feel it out
If it's all about load, it seems like you would start off slow(er) with letting the pedal out then once you start moving come off a little quicker..? Does that sound right? Makes sense with the load. Once the trans. has some force on it you can come off a little quicker and it can deal with the increase instead of going from no force to a lot.

its really hard to explain
its even hard to show
its just something that you have to get the feel of
but you want to ease it and slow it rather then dropping it
not all evos have 2 step
only the 9's and 8 MR's....
when you try to launch it at the normal 5k limiter it tends to bog causing you to have to slip the clutch more then usual so it tends to wear it out more
