Any one had problems getting it to log the wideband after making the cable? I have used to different usb cables now one works but nothing shows up on the log? Is there something else that has to be done to evo scan to make it work

What serial to USB cable are you using? Are you sure you have the "External Wideband" box checked on Evo Scan? Did you try logging with Hyper Terminal just to check the connection? Make sure you have the COM port settings correct, as well.

Hmm, so my problem right now is I have Vista, and when I connect everything up (serial-to-USB), my laptop can't find the driver. I don't have the Dynex, and I can't remember the brand of mine, but I think I got it at Radio Shack. I don't think it came with a CD or anything, so do I need to figure out the brand and then try to find Vista drivers online somewhere?

I luckily managed to find my exact cable on TigerDirect, which then told me the vendor. I then went to the vendor's site and downloaded the drivers for Windows, but it only supported up through XP. Using Tseitz123's post, I was able to get the driver installed and working in Vista. Now, when I connect the cable to the car and my laptop, it installs the driver successfully and shows up on port 5. My Tactrix cable shows up on port 4 as OpenPort1.3 as expected. I am then able to select ComPort 5 in the Wideband pulldown in EvoScan, but that's where it ends.

If I put a tick mark by the WDB parameter and start the logger, then it connects at first and shuts down. I now need to figure out how to select the wideband in my logging parameters and start the logger without it crashing. I also still need a version of EvoScan other than 2.1 since it still logs nothing.

I don't think the radio shack usb converter is Vista compatible. I had to return it and I ended up getting some random internet company's cable who said it was vista compatible. I used the difference in price to get next day shipping. It workes like a charm.

BTW, I have an extra USB cable all sodered up if someone wants to buy it from me. I have sold two of these already, and so far so good.

I'm guessing its probably either the USB to Serial converter not being installed right...... drivers ect.

OR..... you haven't looked up under hardware manager what com port the usb converter was installed on. Once you do that you need to set the comport in the evoscan wideband tab. After that, you can go ahead and check the box, and it should work.

ALSO.... make sure you actually have pin 2 and 5, if you look at it from the back, its not the same as looking at it from the front. Maby take a picture of the serial end, and we can let you know if you have it soldered correctly.

SO, just you make sure, you know that the com port can be assigned differently every time you plug it in, depending on where windows wants it to be.

Now, I don't know what you meant with "I got a new com port "5" in evoscan" means, but I'm assuming that you got the message it was on com 5, and then assigned it in evoscan? Is that correct?

I don't know now, I can't really speculate any further. I know that the first USB to Serial converter from RadioShack didn't work for me on Vista, and I had to get an E-bay special that worked like a charm.

Are you running Vista by any chance? And if so does your converter specifically say its compatible with vista?

I had problems with the USB adapter. The one that finally worked for me was the Belkin PDA Serial Adapter. It says it's for PDAs and it looks odd and has flashing lights on it.. but it worked like a charm on my laptop with Vista.

As far as the wiring goes.. here is my attempt at an illustration:

Blue______________ #2
GND ______ ______ #5
- Y
- I
- I
Grounded on metal in the steering column somewhere

If you're still having problems, check all your connections, check the software installation. Once I got everything the way it needed to be, it all just started working.

I checked what port the wideband is assigned to in EVOScan by looking in the Wideband menu once with the EWB unplugged and then with it plugged in. It added the port to the list.

Again, That's the way it went for my install, so hopefully some of that helps you.

do you solder into the male or female end of the db9. you could probably do either, but the unsoldered end would need to match up with the serial/usb adapter. i guess my question is which end does the dynex usb adapter use to connect to the db9, male or female?
