Just a quick question with regards to AFRs: As long as there is no knocking be registered, a tune or lean/rich AFR can't damage the engine right?

False!!!! Too rich can wash your rings and too lean can burn your valves.

Much much from ideal would the AFRs have to deviate to have that happen?

Say if I did a single WOT log on a newly built untuned 2.4L engine just to see what it's doing.

I honestly can't say on how much of a deviation it would have to be but I would advise to avoid driving the car untuned. Do you have a base map of some sort?

Probably ok, but depends on a number of factors - AFR, boost, length of pull, whether the knock sensitivity tables had been changed...

I would save the stock JDM Rom because it may be hard to find again but yes you can remap it to one of the more popular roms that has more support. There are multiple to choose from to include the Tephra options. I will note that some roms run better then others on certain cars for different reasons. So if the rom you choose is idling kinda of weird then just try another. The differences are extremely subtle and I've ran into it a few times on different setups. Just make sure its an Evo9 rom and keep in mind if you use a USDM rom on a JDM car there may be some emissions sensors that will need to be turned off in the peripherals to avoid check engine lights.

Important: With any rom change... be sure to copy over your ECU Immobilizer code from your old rom OR deactivate it completely on the new rom (all done with ECU Flash). If your car doesn't start after you load up the new rom, this is why.

if you begin your pull and you are too lean/rich (i.e. in the 10s or 14s), you can just back out and make an adjustment. no need to run it to redline like that.

Anyone have experience with using a JDM MIVEC or otherwise modded map with 91 octane? Seems most people talking about modded MIVEC maps are on 93.

I'm on a stock tune with most boltons (TBE, LICP, intake, o2 housing), and trying to learn to tune and wondering if JDM mivec map might be too aggressive. I've been logging (with a wideband) so I know I can gradually increase the values myself and observer for knock, but I'm curious what other people's experiences might have been?

i think youll be fine, you my just need to adjust some other things after. Its been a long time sinc eive messed with mivec, but i seem to recall doing a half jdm/half usdm map and it made a huge difference in around town manners...although no its basically a race car only so it doesnt matter anymore lol.

Looks like the image host went down. Anyone have the images saved somewhere by chance?

I've read through this thread a few times and I've searched around but couldn't find an answer. Maybe I'm using the wrong keywords or something.

Is there a general consensus on which tables should be tuned before others?

From what I've gathered, with 91 octane at least, the priority should be:

1)Adjust timing to eliminate knock
2) Find areas where timing can be improved, and advance the timing without introducing knock
3)Tune Mivec to JDM map or otherwise
4)Finally tune AFR maps to ~11.5 tapering to 10.9 towards redline

All while ensuring we're not introducing new occurrences of knock

Is this the right approach?
