This is my timing map below... I went ahead and bumped up timing in this area since all maps seem to be like this. I thought maybe it would help with lean tip in but made no difference. Actually feels more jumpy at low rpms in a higher gear as opposed to how it was. Also, when i made this change i noticed that when letting off the gas the afrs dont go lean right away as they should (fuel cutting off). Instead, the car keeps moving forward as if i was still on the gas for 2 - 3 seconds and then it will go lean as you can feel the car slowing down as it should. For example, im in 5th gear on the highway and i let off the gas and car keeps moving forward a bit and then injecors will cut off and you can feel it. Does it have anything to do with this?
You can adjust the fuel cut delay in the tables, but that’s how it is standard.

You have some high idle timing, big cams? I’d drop that down to 10ish and see how It behaves.

What do you idle at? If it’s 1000-1200 it may be getting caught doing a timing dance from 14-20ish due to that table. Rescale the axis or smooth the map may help.

I’d throw some more timing at it for sure on a turbo that small, well on 91 I’m not sure if it would take more I suppose.
Also needs some smoothing and finishing in the midrange.

It would knock badly around spool up and peak boost. My old 2.0 motor took more timing than this.

I have gsc s2 cams and if I lower it to 10 it will lobe bad. At 14 still lobey but idles nice. I idle 960 - 1000.

Nor good to see your tuning again!
yea that higher timing 50~80 load below 1000 rpm is to prevent engine stalls when letting out the clutch or if idle drops for some reason the higher timing will help it recover before dying.
the lower timing in low load areas is for idle stability is all.

cheers, 2win

What’s going on brother. Yes every time I get a chance I mess with this thing. It’s all your fault lol. Got me into tuning and now I can’t drive the car without the damn laptop. Super grateful though. Very interesting stuff. Just wish I had more time to mess with it.

Hey Guys would you be able to tell me what you think of this Timing map? Top is un smoothened, what came with the car, Second is after me spending some time with it. Car is mostly stock. Evo 8 with MR turbo running at 20psi.

Your map is smooth and that's key but honestly best is to log and check for knock. See how the car feels and drives. You might be able to run more timing in some areas and need lower timing in others. Keep logging make changes slowly and log some more. Weather, fuel, mods all play a factor.

It would be helpful to post the datalog that shows what timing the car runs.

Most people target roughly 11-12 at 7500 and work backward to 4-6 at 5500, 0-3 around 3500 or so. Boost and fuel will change things a little.

Ill post some logs later on today, really hard for me at the moment to get knock free as i do not have a wideband sensor yet.

I would strongly suggest not beating on the car until you have a wideband and the tuning basics down. You don't want to risk hurting the engine.
