For Your Consideration... Some Maps and Logs - 94 Oct.

After years of running the below uber-sweet super tune I finally got off my butt and threw it in the garbage... and tuned my car myself, from scratch. I should say that I never had problems with my car on the uber-tune; but let's get real that thing is a joke .

So after some very helpful reading on this here forum I hooked up the wideband that had been sitting in a box unopened for over a year and got to tuning! Let me say that this section of the forum rules and really is there to help each other out

My car is an 03 VIII with the typical stuff:
- TBE exhaust
- Intake with Cold Air Box and ducting
- Manual boost control. 24 psi peak tapering to 21 psi at redline (7800 rpm)
- 255 fuel pump
- IC pipes
- Stock IC
- HKS 264 cams
- E-Bizzle O2 housing
- Ported exhaust manifold and turbine housing ('03 9.8 hotside)
- Tuned on 94 Octane

Logs of a 3rd gear pull. I get a tiny count of knock about 1 out of every 4 pulls around the 3000 rpm range... Aiming for mid 12's at spool with around 11.5 during the powerband and tapering to 11.0 at redline. I had to continue taking out timing at around 3500 rpm to keep the serious knock out, and I've left the rest of the timing kinda chill because I'm just getting started with all this tuning action and the car feels pretty hot as-is.

Here are the Maps for this tune.

Feel free to give some input.

I like it. Im not 100% sure on how well its tuned, but I like the fact that you show your maps, so that other's can compare. Even with the mod list! One day when I get off my butt, Ill do the same.

Sure wish we had 94 out here.. Just plane old 91pee

I think it looks pretty good.

You have a fairly safe ignition from which you can start going up. Between 160 and 240 you will find more timing.

keep the idea in your mind that inconsistent low knock at lower loads is not too critical. 2500 to 3000 rpm is tough on the engine knock wise, prolly good practice to not go there for the most part.
I can't keep from reducing the knock down low too, but I do see spikes from time to time, mostly in transitions so I let them go.

94 in puget sound area?
btw if you post logworks files other logworks guys can manipulate the log as if it were their own.

Here's the log file for those interested.

94 is available at the Cenex in Auburn as well as other Cenex stations. Turns out it has a fair amount of alcohol in it, which is lame for mileage and sweet for tuning. It leaned out my AFR's around a full point compared to 92 Chevron fuel. So you have to plan on running it to tune around it. But what's nice is that if you switch to regular 92 it's a change to the safe side as it richens things up.

I figure there is more timing to be had, especially with the magic gas, and I thought about raising the boost a little more as well. But for now I'll run this, and look for some input from the guys in here.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one that saw that... I didn't want to post that same comment until someone else noticed it...

Cheers-

You still have lean spool on from looking at the maps vs actial AFR? With 94 you should be able to run a bit more timing in the mid range and a bit leaner up top. A lot of us in WA run on 92 with a bit more timing/leaner AFRs.

140-160 load area could use some interpolating to smooth it out a bit...

it looks like you have the lma-3? if so you should hook up the vacuum port for reading boost.

I'm impressed at the relative flatness of your afr, ie no big bounces out of your intended afr.

personally I don't understand why people keep saying raise the fuel in high rpm. I run flat all the way out. My case is a little different because I add water under boost, but I run 12.5 from start to finish. 23 or 25 psi.

I just have an LM-1 so no boost logging available. I may do the JDM Map sensor so I can log boost later.

My AFR are nice and steady because I have an excel spread sheet that takes the current map and compares it to logged values and then calculates new values based on a "desired" values map. Sounds confusing!

I went and logged as many conditions as possible to fill my "logged" map and it made the rest pretty easy. Then I focused on refining the areas in the powerband.

That would go against everything this section of the forum stands for.

Here it is attached. Make sure you follow the steps listed in the file. For people who use excel a lot this will be pretty easy to understand, if you aren't a big excel person you may get a headache. I used ECUFlash to create my desired map because it's easier to see it with colors and interpolate, then I pasted it into the spreadsheet. You end up pasting back and forth a bunch. But it's a quick way to rough in a lot of data.
