Question Map Switching and Me

Okay, I've been reading ECUflash threads for a few months and my head still hurts reading this stuff. I see the answers, but I can't make them come together in my head.

Anyway, I really like the map switching on the tephra v5. I just want to make sure I understand my planning in my mind so I can proceed with my upgrades when I get back form my vacation in Iraq.

So I am going to get some Cosworth M2 cams with valve train upgrade and a meth injection kit and possibly a zeitronix wideband with the safety alarm solenoid thingy. I also have an e-cutout on my car matted to a stock cat/cat back.

I want a two mode system with a switch so I can move to a different map. I want some kind of failsafe so that if the meth kit fails that the ECU will switch to the safer map immediately. I want boost to be controlled via the ECU. Right now I have an MBC. TTP has a pretty neat setup, but I don't really want to have to buy a maft-pro to make this work if I can avoid it.

What do I need to do?
Get the JDM Map sensor and GM boost control solenoid to support ECU direct boost control?
I need Jack-of-Trades switch harness?
What do I need to make the meth kit interact with the ECU so that if it fails, it will go to the safer map? I know I can buy a failsafe for the kit or use a zeitronix to trip an alarm if the EGTs or AFRs are off.

My goal is to be able to do all this and keep things are simple as possible. I want to minimize add-ons/piggy backs so it feels kind of stock when I am driving to work and with the flip of a switch become a stock turbo, high boost, high rpm, mid-11 second beast. I assume the Tephra V5.8 is going to be a starting point for an ECUflash, right? Thanks for any help.

I'm unaware of any way to have the stock ecu switch maps automatically so i would recommend the following setup:

Run Jack of all Trades switch harness with a Tephra patched rom for map switching. Both maps will have separate fuel and timing values but the same for boost. For boost control go with something like the AEM tru boost and a jdm 3bar map sensor...this way you can tune your street and race boost curves precisely with the tru boost using the data acquired from evoscan and the JDM MAP. Moreover, you can set the tru boost to cut to wastegate spring pressure if the wai fails or isn't flowing at the rate it should be.

kind of like the setup on this sti:

I'd rather go with something like Mr. Fred's ECU direct boost control.
Why couldn't something like a Zeitronix Solenoid trigger the safer map off the Jack-of-Trades harness?

What you require is very simple. Use any 3 port solenoid to control boost. I use an Apexi AVCR solenoid. As for a water injection kit I use AEM. This can be tied into the Jack_of_Trades cable with a simple wiring alteration. With a flick of the cable's switch you change to your alternative maps (fuel, timing, boost) and turn on the AEM. If the AEM detects a fault it will automatically make the ECU switch back to your standard maps. Alternatively you can use an Aquamist kit which can interact directly with the ECU. I believe Jack_of_Trades has a special cable for this too.

This has been done using the GM solenoid and an aquamist kit.

You're on the right track.

As a first cut, get the J_of_T harness and a JDM MAP sensor. The GM solenoid is not absolutely necessary, but lots of people like it. Its necessary to cut the factory wiring to use the GM solenoid. Tactrix just released a nice solenoid that is completely plug-n-play. Its a $109 though vs the GM solenoid which I think is around $50 or less.

Direct boost control works very well, but takes time to tune. Of course I like it. I've been using it for almost a year now. :-)

Then you'll need to download the Tephra v5.8 ROM when its released (should be very soon). The J_of_T harness plugs into the ECU and then can be plugged into the meth kit to offer a set of failsafe maps. The failsafe maps can just be regular pump gas maps so when the meth system is disabled, the ECU will automatically switch to the pump gas (failsafe) maps.

<Step 1>
Purchase...
Tactrix Cable
Tactrix BCSolenoid
JDM Map Sensor
J_of_T Harness
Meth Kit w/Failsafe

<Step 2>
Install and tune

<Step 3>

I can set up a harness for you that can be setup to trigger the safer "pump gas" maps by all of the following:
  • The Water/Meth Injection Kits failsafe output (currently offer harness' for Aquamist and AEM so far)
  • The Zeitronix warning output
  • A manual override switch

Basically, I can setup almost any layout you can imagine to trigger the "safer maps".

if you get a 3 port maybe like perrin or some of those bigger ones can those lessen the taper a bit more than the gm?

As far as I know, the Perrin has the same performance as the GM 3-port.
