I have a spare 9 ECU that I’d happily donate to anyone willing to take this on.

'06 here. Now that you mention it, I think I can take it in for the second air bag recall and they have a Reflash due. BOOM.

All the ROMS are out there, no need for an ECU.

I assumed someone might want to bench troubleshoot this rather than using the ECU in their car but okay.

Oh, I misunderstood your post then, my apologies. I thought you where talking about just going back to a stock rom. Now I see you are talking about figuring out the CVN "issue".

I am shocked that this isn’t a bigger issue for more people. Is Cali the only state that requires smog inspection? If there are others I would not be surprised if they follow suit with California on this. Perhaps someone has the ability contact one of the gurus to work on this. I would be willing to donate for this.

Maybe Mrfred can help on the CT9A side?

I can confirm on the CZ4A side that the CVN number changes with *any* modification to the rom in the ECU. It's also a randomly generated number that appends to the base CVN. The twist is that the ECU creates the randomly generated number after a predetermined matter of time after a flash. So if you check the CVN directly after your flash, you might not see a change but wait a bit and check again and the randomly generated CVN number will be there. I tested this personally this last weekend on my personal Evo 10.

AFAIK The ECU is hashing the Rom. So basically even a single bit change can completely change the hash output depending on the algorithm. None of that really matters to us though, all we would need is the known "correct" hash to be a hard coded return.

Parts of New Jersey are starting to do it as well. Go figure. Right when I move out of California and to New Jersey.. Son of a....

If I had to guess, it's going to start becoming part of the OBD2 process everywhere. I mean, they put CVN's in there for a reason.

At least I have 93 now.

True.. Kalifornia does seem to lead the way, when it comes to stopping global warming (inside joke). I'm all for less smog in certain areas, I guess. Now that you mention it, though, I do seem to remember hearing that NY is following close suit, when it comes to smog stuffs. When you have a crazy-concentrated population I suppose they gotta do something. Any time I'm about to complain about smog, I think of my last drive through L.A.

P.S. 93 > e85, IMO.

Stock rom

So is it possible that even if I flash back to stock that the cvn number will not be correct, due to the fact that I have flashed it probably over a hundred times over the years?

You will be fine if you flashed back to your ORIGINAL ROM and, as mentioned above, caught up on any updates from Mitsu (I have a IX and would need to go get updated).

I don't think inspectors require you to be on the latest ROM ID do they? I would think as long as your CVN matches up with your CAL ID then your good. I'm pretty sure* there are newer rom ID's for my 2011 X, but they didn't say anything about it when I had it inspected.

*not certain though, so I could just be oblivious here.

Has anyone tried to use this to pass emissions recently? I am located in Denver CO and got my evo 9 a few months ago and have been struggling to get it to pass.
