Differnece in ROMs
Differnece in ROMs
What is the difference between the different ROM's.Can i use any rom for my car? Im sorry for the noob question, just trying to learn on the basics in tuning my car.
For your 03, depending on when it was built, it came with either a 94170008 or a 94170015 ROM. There may have been very late model 03's that came with the 04 ROM, but every 03 I have personally seen is of the 9417 family. You can also run a 9653 variant by changing the immobilizer hex and editing some of the ISCV tables, and resetting the BISS. For less hassle, I would suggest you stay with the 94170015 ROM as it requires less end user tweaking to run right. FWIW, I run 96533706 in my 03.
Here are the V7 supported ROM's.
RomID - Year/Compatibility
9417xxxx - 03, 04, 05 evo8 ROM
9653xxxx - 03, 04, 05 evo8 ROM
8859xxxx - 06 evo9 ROM

You will receive a lot of different opinions on this, but it is a very good beginner question.
Some EVO owners will want to stick with the ROM that came with their car. Makes sense, as that is the ROM that Mitsu designed specifically for that car.
Other owners will want to run the most recent ROM version of the ROM that came with their car. This also makes sense, as it would have all of the latest code, bug fixes, etc.
There has been some push within the EVO end user community (not Mitsu) to come up with a universal ROM. Meaning, to agree upon one ROM that will work in the most EVO ECUs. For the EVO VIII ('03, '04, '05) 9653xxxx has been pretty well established as the universal ROM. Of course, this is optional and not without differing opinion even among the troops.
Unless you are interested in squeezing out the maximum performance from your ECU, I'd suggest sticking with the ROM that came with your car from the factory.
On the other hand, should you be a performance enthusiast, I suggest a Tephra ROM in the latest iteration - Version 7. Tephra ROMs are highly enhanced ROMs with a lot of added features and improvement to Mitsu's efforts. Very worth while IMO. You will want to use either 96530006 (Universal ROM) or 94170015.

I have tested both 96530006 and 94170015 on my EVO VIII. I think the 9653 performs the best. However, I suggest eventually trying both of these ROMs, once you learn how to change the ROM, move tables, etc. For now, do a lot of searching and reading...particularly on these items:
EvoScan
ECUflash
Tactrix cable
