Angry about to give up

i wouldnt consider myself a noob since i have been reading alot about ecu flash, evoscan, roms, xml formats, tephrav7, etc etc. i have also watched the 16 videos on youtube that R3COMPIL3 posted on how to tune an evo. which i understood just about everything after watching them a couple of times. i actually just finished a bowl of popcorn while watching them again tonight.

now here is where i feel stupid as **** and im starting to think about just saying screw it and going aem ems. i have ecu flash downloaded, and i thought i had evoscan downloaded as well but cant seem to find it on my laptop so i guess i dont or i didnt. first question is is there somewhere to download it for free like ecuflash? i looked and the only place i seen it was at evoscan.com for $25. i thought i downloaded it for free at one time but maybe not. if i didnt ill happily pay the $25 bucks if i can get my next questions answered.

my next question is do i have to have my specific rom from my car read through ecuflash to view the rom? i have been trying to download some stock evo 8 roms and view them in ecuflash but cant. no matter what i do or where i save any rom i can not view it so im guessing i have to buy a tactrix cable and read from my ecu which is going to be of no use to me right now since it was flashed by the previous owner and is prob far from stock.

i need help or else im giving up on this because i figured i could download a stock evo 8 rom and open it in ecuflash and play around with it to get a feel for some of the stuff but it seems i cant open anything in the program so wtf is the deal? PLEASE

You need to buy evoscan for 25$, yes.

Regarding opening the rom, what happens when you try to open it in Ecuflash? Any error?

yes. i have prob downloaded 8 or 9 different roms just trying to get into ecuflash to mess around with it and familiarize my self with it and it comes up with an error message saying unknown rom image ecuflash could not recognize this rom image unsing any of the current definitions you can choose on of the following options. then it list abort using this rom image, and the second option is use wizard to create a new defintion (not recommended for developers only)

it looks exactly like post #335 in the following link except my error message does not list the continue using this rom option.

i finally found one that works. i went here http://evoecu.logic.net/wiki/96530006 and dowloaded the 96530006 rom and save it to my desktop and it will open in ecuflash. according to the website link it says this is a universal evo 8 rom. the website didnt have any 03 evo roms so would this one work for my car lets say if i wanted to flash it back to stock since i have no idea what the turbotrix did to the ecu when the previous owner had the ecu flashed?

sorry if these questions seem really stupid to the advanced tuners out there im trying to learn lol and trust me im doing alot of searching and reading. hence why i finally found a rom that i can open in ecu flash to at least mess around with before attempting to read and write to my own car.

You get that error because you don't have a proper xml definition for the rom you're trying to open. When you get it select the option to use the wizard to create a definition. Keep pressing next until you get the a screen that will give you the romid (something like 88590715). Once you have that you can search for an xml definition for that romid. Once you have it place it in your ecuflash/rommetadata/mitsubishi/evo directory, restart ecuflash, and you should be able to open the rom correctly.

is this the wiki page your talking about? http://evoecu.logic.net/wiki/96530006 i downloaded a few different ones and properly named them just to get an idea of what all will change and how they differ

also i was messing around with the 94170015 rom and seen it has a rev limit and stationary rev limit. is the stationary rev limit like the factory two step found on evo 9's?

have you tried some of the roms from http://www.evoscan.com/roms/mitsubishi/
both the hex file and the xml file are available for many of the roms.
You can even choose "select ALL" and it will zip up all the available xml files into one zip file, that you can load into your ecuflash C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenECU\EcuFlash\rommetadata\mitsubishi\evo\ folder

also there are many more user guides and help available:
http://www.evoscan.com/free-ecu-rom-downloads
http://www.evoscan.com/ecu-mods

a few of those links i have seen, and a couple i hadnt which have been helpful.

im still researching this stuff and figured out a lot of things on my own, but you guys have been very helpful. i may have to go back an watch the 16 videos again a few times to figure out more stuff especially the xml stuff, which i think has to do with my next question.

ive downloaded a 94170015 rom which from what ive read and seen is a stock evo 8 rom. ive downloaded the tephra v7 patch and extracted all the files into the openecu folder. im assuming it worked to an extent since now when i go to view the 94170015 rom i have new options highlighted in blue, however i do not have anything like NLTS, FLASHING CEL, etc etc. is this where the xml comes in? i downloaded the xmls from the tephra thread, but cant figure out what im doing again.

I can help. Please email or call me. I will send you the file to rop into the ECU Flash folder, and be able to walk you through it over the phone.

I will give you name and number in a P.M.

If you wish.

Hopefully raceghost comes through and can give me some serious help because i need it.

basically i have been trying to get all of the added features of the tephra and have tried everything i can think of. now for some reason any rom i could access before i cant im getting that stupid F*****G error message and have locked myself out of every rom. So i figured i would just wipe my computer from every ecuflash, openecu, tactrix, and tephra file and start over. well, i redownloaded only the ecuflash, tephra v7 xml pack on the main tephra thread, and the 94170715 rom on the same thread. i also tried to redownload two of the roms that previously worked before, the 94170015 and 94170014, and well neither of them will work now. im guessing there are still some files that i accidentally altered not allowing them to open or something *facepalm* F**K i dont know and im getting very frustrated, irritated, and impatient with this stupid ****. it better be worth my while. what i dont understand is obviously the people who created these things were computer wiz's so why couldnt they write a simple how to in normal english for those of us who cant write binary code etc etc. /sarcasm/rant

Have you tried downloading the rom thats currently in your vehicles ecu?
Because I couldn't open anything in ecuflash untill I downloaded my rom.
When I opened the metadata folder it was empty.
It wasn't untill I downloaded my ecu's rom then I had access to everything.
