Deck Installation

I was wondering how difficult it is to install a cd deck into an evo. I went into best buy to ask them about their installation and they made a big fuss about how they dont know if they do evos and i had to leave my car there all day. I don't have any installation experience, but I figure it cant be that hard to install a single din deck into a single din slot. correct me if im wrong. The links at the bottom are to the two decks im thinking of getting. I have a non-SSL evo.

It's really easy. Everything is standardized in terms of wires, screw holes, etc. Just buy the deck from somewhere that's cheap and you trust, and buy a wire harness. match the wire colors up, and plug the other end into the stock plugs.

Do it yourself....it's so simple it's almost mindless. Do like jdub765 said, but the harness and you're all set.

Just take the brackets off the stock deck and screw them onto your new one.

The only thing that you have to watch out for is that the Evo radio antenna has a signal amplifier that requires 12 V. The OEM headunit supplies the power. When I installed my aftermarket headunit, I used the 12 V accessory power (not the blue speaker amplifier power wire/power antenna mast wire, but the red wire) coming off the stereo harness to power the radio signal amplifier. If you don't run power to the radio signal amplifier, the FM reception will suck.

Other than that, just read the how-to on the site. The how-to explains everything else.

Why is my only question? Do you have some vendetta against using a wire that is designed to complete the objective that you are looking to complete?

I read somewhere else on EvoM that the blue accessory wire on stereos only sends 12 V for a few minutes after the headunit is turned on. They said that they had tried the blue wire with the antenna amp, and found that after 10 min, the signal went to crap again. I don't know if its true or not, but I didn't care for the idea of trying the blue wire and then having to go back into the stereo yet again to change the wire connections if its true.

I've never heard of anything like that before and have installed many audio systems.

this 1 is easy. i'll save u the trouble.

1) buy the Alpine CDA-9857 (not the 1 u chose) $289 thru onlinecarstereo.com
2) get the ipod cable ($30)+ a stock lancer harness ($11) thru crutchfiled.com
3) do not go to a large place like Best Buy ever again to purchase audio equipment-it's insulting to us "true audiophiles"
4) pull the 3 A/C knobs off to reveal 2 Phillips screws. remove screws
5) gently pull the fascia surrounding the radio/ac unit off to reveal 4 Phillips screws holding stock deck in place.
6) remove 4 Phillips screws & unplug stock radio from harness.
7) wire stock harness from step 2 to wire harness of new deck.
8) plug lancer harness into factory evo plug & other into new deck. screw deck in w/1 screw (deck is grounded when screwed in)
9) turn igniton on to make sure it works
10) put everything back together in reverse order. Enjoy new deck.

oh yeah, this will take you about 10min to do all that yourself...

ah ic. whoever said that is a complete moron. either a) they didn't know what they were talking about or b) their aftermarket deck was bad. you would had no problem using the blue. with that being said, having it on the switched ignition doesn't really hurt anything. the only difference is going to be power will go to the antenna while the car is on and the radio is off. otherwise it will be the same as the remote turn on wire (blue/white).

Yeah Best Buy is garbarge.

I bought my headunit there because I had a giftcard, and they offered free installation. Anyways when it was all done and over (after I bought everything) they quoted my on about $300 dollars to re-wire everything, and I would lose the ability to use my SSL amp.

I ended up just buying the headunit there, buying the harness for everything off crutchfield and my neighbor install it for me (he does installations at Cicuit city, but he did it for free in my driveway )

yes. bb sux. and yes that 300 was a rip, BUT when adding an aftermarket deck to most oem infinity/mitsu radios (all except the gen 2 dsms), you need to bypass the infinity amp. they WERE RIGHT in that respect (unless the evo infinity radio is setup like the gen 2; i haven't worked on one yet so i'm not 100% positive).

the reason? the infinity radio just has harness for power and uses a din cable to connect to the amp. the amp has the regular wire outputs. the aftermarket radio has to be wired to those. most likely this is what your friend did. so you STILL don't use the ssl amp.

the other reason you bypass a premium system amp? most amplifiers can only handle input voltages of no more than 5 volts. when you hook up a aftermarket radio to the amp, you now are feeding it 17-24 volts rms and that will easily blow the amp (and can also blow the radio and speakers as well; although unlikely). the only other way is to get a premium system interface that allows you to turn down the gain output by the radio to keep the amp from blowing.

so while their service stinks, they overcharge for labor, and 99% of the time their salespeople are wrong, they were right in this case (oh and their parts are of much better quality than crutchfield. i've installed with both and can't stand crutchfield and their multi purpose kits).

I still have use of my SSL sub, using a special adapter. I told the peopel at Best Buy, and at a Local Audio store and neither of them had heard of it before, its a Mitah adapter for the infinity sound system.

If you go here https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...highlight=9857 and go to the third post down thats the 'walkthrough' that I used when purchasing everything for my headunit.
