Disable Interior Lights @ Night

Saab (don't laugh) had a function back in the late 1990s and early 2000s where the driver could push a button and all the interior lights of a vehicle would go dark except the speedometer. Of course, map lights, etc. still worked but the entire dash went dark - HVAC, radio, etc.

This was *really* helpful during long drives at night; it would have been nice to see the tach also but from a legality perspective, this was huge.

Has anyone undertaken anything similar?

In the evo, I'd be wiling to live with a switch that disabled all the interior dash lights EXCEPT for the speedo and tach.

It can be done, but would involve ripping apart the cluster and testing each section on how the current flows. If it is multiple wires for illumination running to each gauge, or one for everything.

If there are different wires for each, you should be able to figure it out from there. If there is only one for all the lights, you have to rewire the circuit board.

Well my friend got red bulbs for his sweet honda element. haha but it worked really well, the element has a dimmer, but it doesn't go low enough. The red worked great. See what kind of bulbs the dash board has, and if you can change them out.
