Cams and cam gears.
I was wondering what you guys think of cams, should I? I hear the HKS 272. I want some decent gains out of the EVO but I also do not want to sacrafice daily drivability, what kind of changes will I notice with them and how much do they cost? A friend has an MR in my town and he has the HKS 272, I asked about cam gears as well and he said they were not neccessary and the cams work great... about $600 or so, a tough install?
there is a how to at this site.

I know shops around my area charge about 250 for the install if you don't want to bother with it.
Most people do not mind the lopey idle of 272's, i think it may be tuned to idle ok if i'm not mistaken...other than that it does not really affect daily driving from what i've read for the past few months of researching cams. it seems the guys that are bothered by the lopey idle go with a 264in 272ex combo which supposedly idles more like stock, or just straight 264's. I personally will be going with straight 272's. I think it will have more power on the top-end, afterall everybody around here doesn't want to race from a dig anyway. i know Marty from injectedperformance.com sells the cams in this forum for 539shipped. It's the cheapest i've seen.

If this is any consolation, there is really no difference in power between the 264's and 272's on the stock turbo. So unless you are upgrading your turbo, you might as well go with the 264's and better idle.
There is a thread on here which has proven this on the dyno with the same car, same dyno.
Either way a great mod....

Are the 264's cheaper? is this a case that has been determined 100% or is it a controversial gain dilemma, I might as well go with the 272's if that is the case. I would go with the 264's if it is indeed assuring same gains but a more friendly idle.
Usually they're the same price. Definitely sounds like the 264s would be the best choice for you. I only got 272s because I got a great deal on them "new/used" (bought but never put in) 264's will get you as much power on the stock turbo and be much closer to stock as far as sound and idle.
All of the Dyno charts I've seen confirm that 264s and 272s get similar power, the difference is where it is... 264s a bit more up front, 272s a bit more on the top end, and combos level it out a bit.

why dont u buy the GSC 272/264. Better power gains than HKS. I am an HKS fan but after seeing dyno graphs and what Al said about these cams, it should be better than HKS since they are basically a copy of the HKS with better stuff
For starters, I disagree with the statement that the 272s won't deliver more power than the 264s with a 16G. They most certainly will, but how much or little depends upon other factors, including supporting mods, competency of tuning, and naturally, cam timing.
Additionally, if idle quality is a concern, the 264s will idle better than 272s as compared at the same cam timing settings. On that note, with cam gears, the 272s can be made to idle like stock cams. Of course, tuning the cams with idle quality as a priority will sacrifice a bit of power and spool time.
