Break In Period question
Break In Period question
I need some advice from someone who owns an evo about how you went about breaking in your motor. Should i use synthetic oil? Should I really change the oil after the first 500 miles?
Should i use a rev limiter or do i want it to be driven over the whole range? how many miles? etc. break it down and dont be gentle.

Hi there
the first 400 - 500 miles, you shouldnt boost the car at all. Boost depends on gear and throttle position.
Keep revs below 2500 for the first 150 miles or so, below 3000 until you've done 300 miles, then progressively more. Change the oil at around 700 - 900 miles, then progressively increase rpms say up to 5000 and boost it. After you've done 2000 miles, I'd change the oil again and then blow fresh oil through the turbo.
NEVER boost or go over 3000 rpms when the car is cold, ie before you've driven 10 - 15 miles and the oil temp is around 85 - 90°C.
Leave the factory oil (whatever that is) in there for the first 700 miles, then change to fully synthetic 10W60 (I use Castrol RS).

I've always been a fan of varying the rpms / on the gas off the gas (but still staying far below 5K ) to fully expand / set the rings. Curious how I'm going to do that and not spool the turbo up even a little. Best I've found (whilst exp in my GSX) is very smoothly and slowly raise the rpms in say 2nd gear, this seems to produce a minimal amound of boost.
Other then keeping the revs below 2500 for the first 150 miles I agree with Claudius 100%

made us wait soooo DAMN long for the cars (and we're still waiting), how many of us will have the paitence remaining to follow the propper break-in
I'll need a throttle stop or something
Thanks guys!
I read somewhere the factory fill is Mobil-1 Synthetic.
I agree it is going to be difficult not to let go, but I figure as long as I don't crash this car I will probably have it until I die, i can take it easy for a first couple thousand miles. when the odo hits 2001...

Good point chronohunter!
I actually ran my first Evo in for about 500 miles
but dont tell anyone!
Paid a lot of attention running in the stroker kit though
The rings need to set properly like Leonard pointed out, so boosting it heavily from the start isnt the best of ideas if you know what I mean.
Maybe a good idea would be to get a boost gauge from the start? How about that?

The tires need about 200 to get "scrubbed", as was pointed out, keep below 5000 rpm's for about 500 miiles and take it easy on the brakes for about 300 miles. Your EVO will thank you.
You will have lots of time to put it through its paces
