Invidia O2 Housing Install - O2 Sensor Cable Problem
Invidia O2 Housing Install - O2 Sensor Cable Problem
Looking for ideas on how to lengthen the O2 Sensor stock cable that runs over the top of the engine and down to the O2 housing.
Those of you who have installed the new Invidia O2 Housing on an 03/(04?)... know that the stock cable ends up being stretched a bit tight, especially if you account for any engine movement.
I also had to leave the "T" shaped coil cover (that says Mitsubishi) off of the engine in order for the cable to even reach the other connector in the middle.
A quick search didn't net me any results or ideas (sorry if I missed something on it)
1. Can I just splice in a length of cable (actually 3 wires) - without throwing off any calibrations etc... - I have been told that at least one of the 3 wires is shielded, so I am allowing for that.
2. Do you think that male/female connectors that Mitsubishi uses might be available in order to make an extension cable? (things would be a lot cleaner that way).
I'm not willing to leave it stretched in it's current position, or leave the coil cover off the engine.
Thanks for any help or ideas

I ran the stock wire under the cover, but I moved (bent) the AC line just a bit to make room for the sensor. I also put some elec tape on the end of the wires to help with the sharp angle of the wires.
Hope that helps.

I was concerned about the problem you're having, which is why I haven't gotten the Invidia housing. My options are to have the O2 bung relocated to the original spot or a harness extension. I asked
https://www.casperselectronics.com if they had an 12" extension for the front O2 or if the could make one. They said it would be no problem and that they probably had the correct connectors to make them and go for about $25 retail. Anyhow, just passing this info to you. I've sent them numerous pictures of the connectors in detail. It probably would not hurt if you and anyone else interested contact them as well, because whoever gets the Invidia housing will be on the same boat and could use a harness extension.

I made 2 extensions so far.. On my 2000 eclipse and on a honda, because of a new header... Its easy.. it had 4 wires though, just got 4 extra wires soldered, heatshrunk and put electrical tape on each connection.
My brother has the car now.. no problems in 6 years...
I personally would make extensions granted its not going to look so pretty but will not cause any problems from my experience, and if I had that housing I would do the same to my evo...

splicing the wires to give it some length wont do any harm as long as you make good connections. it'll just be ugly. best to do them one at a time so you dont get confused as to which wire goes where. is this only an evo viii problem or is it on the ix as well?
as posted by greddyevo(thanks for the pic)
it was said you can get extra length by going under the "T" cover and unhooking the plugs from the clips holding the plugs onto the head cover. i haven;t looked at mines yet, but it's what i'm planning to do.

You need to not have buschur exhaust. The dp on buschur doesnt match up to the invidia 02 housing.. The invidia is rounded kinda where the buschur is flat

Nirvevo,
There are just two thing that comes to my mind that you could try if you haven't so far:
1) undo the plastic clip that secures the harness at the valve cover location
2) undo or bent out the metal clips along the header shield.
Between these two tips I just gave you you should be getting a few extra inches. I am kind of curious about this O2 housing(Invidia), I just did my Works O2 housing and I had 0 issues. Where is this o2 plug relocated on your o2 housing? there is not much space to relocate it far, it should reach..

The good news is that the smaller opening on Buschur DP can be easily modify for a bigger diameter. By the way I am not trying to trash the Buschur DP at all, I am just saying the way is built is not compatible with some upgrade O2 housings.

the best I could do was to leave off the T cover and separate the O2 cable from the little harness area where all the other wires are bundled. Then I ran it straight over the top of the engine and was able to connect things with at least a little slack to allow for enging movement etc...
The O2 fitting on the Invidia is moved from the left side (as you face the engine) over to slightly right of dead center, so the heat shield becomes unusable without some creative redesign.
This may only be an 03/04 cable issue, I'm not familair with the 05 or the IX in that area. I'm thinking it's the same at least on the 05.
The part that I didn't tell you guys, was that I put a flare nut wrench through 2 of the the AC Condensor tubes as I was doing a final torque check on the O2 sensor (DOH !!!!!!) (I remember saying always use the right tool for the job, wish I would have listened to myself :-D
(I had the radiator out, which is why I hit the AC Condensor) it's unrepairable, so I am waiting for a new condensor (aftermarket, the new ones are around $700 List!!! so becareful out there )
Can anybody comment on the performance change from stock to the Invidia housing? I have a RMR 3" DP & CB w/HFC and a 10.5 HS. Anybody try the Invidia with similar exhaust mods ( not the brand of Exhaust, just the same basic configuration)? if so what can you say about it?
I had no problems with mine on my 03. My picture above shows the route I ran the wire. The o2 wire is snug but not tight, i just had to do without the metal tab that the plug clips to under the coil cover. I have had over 1000 miles since the install and still no problems.
May be there were different lengths on the stock sensor, because mine will noe get even close to what you show.
I did take apart the original assembly that was screwed down under the coil cover. I removed the metal clip from the plug that it was on.
The other side of my cable is pulled slightly back across the engine, (between cyl 2&3) ... and the sensor side is stretched straight up over the center of the Ex Man heat shield and they barely clip together.
There is no way that my cables will reach the same way yours shows. I would be happy if they did though, yours looks fine.
There must be about a 2 inch difference in the sensor side of the cable on some 03/04's. That's all I would need to do it the way you did yours.
I'll try to get a picture, so you can see what I mean, before I put on an extension. I'll at least get the length of sensor side cable so others can check their Sensor side and know what to expect.

Look at the wire loom on the backside of the valve cover. I did remove a little electrical tape to free up more wire, but I didnt think I got much out of it. Yours might be taped up more than mine was, assuming all the harnesses are almost exact.

In other words, even if I could make if reach to the back side connector in the same area that you have yours connected (essentially the "stock" location), I couldn't get the valve cover back on, I'd have to leave the cable on top, not tucked under the valve cover.
I think I'll just do an extension. I haven't measured the front cable length yet, I'll try to do that and post my results. If that ends up being the difference, at least others will be able to know before they do the install whether or not they'll need to work out a fix.
Thanks for the reply
