Changed transfer case oil yesterday - low initially? (little long)
Finally got some Diaqueen 90 weight LSD Gear oil so I decided to change the TC oil in my IX yesterday. I performed it in my garage by doing the passenger side jacking method (heh).
The odd thing is, the fluid that came out was black as night and looked like only a cup full or so. Didn’t even look like a half quart to me. I even let it all drain with all wheels touching the ground for a good half hour or so while I cleaned the magnet. I was also surprised from the magnet as my car only has ~3300 miles on it and the magnet was pretty much covered with fine particles. There were only about 2 or 3 slightly larger then the other particles but no huge chunks. Comparatively my car seemed pretty quiet though, sounds normal and definitely a lot quieter than any 2003 or 04 I've ridin in at least *I* think.
Anyways, I go about the fill-up process with all four wheels on the ground again. I even took the time to put some shims under my rear wheels as I know my garage slops down 3/4" every 10 feet similar to other poured garages. The car was pretty close to perfectly level when I started to fill it up. I used a measurable funnel (in ounces) and some 1/2" tubing with a 1/4" adapter that fits perfectly inside the TC fill hole. I measured out about 20 ounces in the measurable funnel and start to poor it in. I figured I may spill some and wanted to try and give it a little extra so I could see a little drain out the fill hole.
A few minutes later all the oil is completely drained into the transfer case and I didn’t seem to spill a drop. I then take a flashlight and watch from the top of the car where I was filling as I pull the tubing from the fill plug on the tc using some long-kneck pliers. As soon as I took the plug out a tiny, tiny bit of fluid came out of the fill hole. It dripped for maybe another 10 seconds or so but that was it! I was expecting a lot more to come spilling out when I took the adapter out. Im confused as to how I got so much fluid in there as I measured 20 oz in the funnel which is about .625 quarts and the manual calls for .58 to refill it. Either it was low to begin with, my measurable funnel is off, or the oil went somewhere else....? I'm always reading how people can't even get .58 into their TC when they refill it. Should I not have performed the passenger side jack method? I mean I filled it when perfectly level and drained it when perfectly level so wtf? I'm thinking that the measurable funnel isn't exactly true or something but it just seemed like I dumped a lot more fluid in then what came out.
Anyone’s thoughts or opinions would be cool but please, no one respond with "dude are you sure you changed your TC and not your tranny oil"? I uh, do know the differences between the two
One more thing, from seeing how terrible dark and nasty my TC oil was at ~3K miles, I think I'll be changing it every 5K or after any track events.
